BARCELONA, Spain -- The son needed the father. It didn't matter that this was the 1992 Summer Olympics, that the stadium was packed, that the night was so hot and the air so thick that a haze hung over the place.Derek Redmond was trying to run and he was crying. His Olympics should have been over, but they weren't.He was down the back straightaway in this 400-meter semifinal last night, running for Great Britain, racing for his father and himself. And then the right hamstring cramped. Took him like a Lawrence Taylor tackle and whipped him to the ground.

Light air and sweltering temperatures made this year's back-to-back Annapolis-to-Miles River Race on Saturday and Miles River Race Back on Sunday difficult to the point of impossibility for the bulk of the 15-class fleet of more than 150 boats.Only a handful of competitors could complete either event.None of the competitors in the seven classes using Saturday's Miles River Yacht Club 24-mile course from Annapolis to the Miles River could complete the race within the 10-hour time limit.Only 28 of the 39 starters in five of the eight classes using the more direct 17-mile course were able to finish in time.

This year's total of 225 boats registered made CBYRA's annual Annapolis Race Week for 1991, held over the Labor Day weekend, the biggest ever in the 25-year history of the event. The record number of competitors and the large numbers of sailors from both ends of the bay and just about everywhere in between offered a chance for exciting competition against new and old rivals and helped encourage heavy participation through the regatta.Frustratingly light and shifty winds coupled with a foul current in Saturday's first contest of the three-race series confounded many sailors in both fleets.

It was a smaller turnout than expected, but the Severn Sailing Association's annual Colonial Cup Regatta for Snipes was filled with rock-'em, sock-'em racing.Thirty-five entries, including top-level competition from New England and the best from this region, was about half what organizers had hoped for.But it was a textbook example of quality over quantity.Winners in the four-race series were defending Colonial Cup champion Ed Adams of Newport, R.I., and crew Carol Neuman, landing a solid one-two punch (2-1, 2-1, actually)

An early April warm spell produced a lot of enthusiasm for being outon the water over the weekend, but the glorious weather meant that hot air over still-cold water combined with a weak prevailing westerlyto make racing conditions challenging on the bay.Sunday, a fleetof 20 boats turned out for a new single-handed race from Triton Light at the Naval Academy out to Thomas Point and back.Ranging in size from three J/22s to a CSY 50, the fleet was predominantly made up of boats 30 feet and under, and was divided into a 13-boat spinnaker division and a seven-boat non-spinnaker class.
