Left-handed pitchers Craig Lefferts and Pat Clements filed for free agency yesterday, bringing to six the number of Orioles who have either opted to test the free-agent market or have been released by the club.Lefferts, who was 1-3 with a 4.09 ERA in five starts after he was acquired from the San Diego Padres, is not expected to be back next year. The Orioles could have kept him by offering salary arbitration last week, but chose instead to cut him loose along with veteran right-hander Storm Davis.

Todd Zeile said yesterday he was told by Orioles general manager Pat Gillick that the reason the club was leaning against bringing the third baseman back for the 1997 season was so it could move shortstop Cal Ripken to third.Zeile's agent, Seth Levinson, spoke with Gillick on Monday and the general manager said afterward, "At this point, I don't think [Zeile] is coming back. We're leaning in another direction."Gillick could not be reached for comment yesterday. On Monday, he said moving Ripken to third base was "possibly" the other direction he was referring to.Zeile said yesterday from his California home that Gillick made it clear to his agent that the Orioles' decision not to bring him back was so Ripken could be moved from shortstop, where he has played almost entirely during his 15-year career and 2,316 consecutive games played.

Rick Sutcliffe filed for free agency yesterday, but agent Barry Axelrod insists the veteran pitcher still has every hope of returning to the Orioles.Sutcliffe became one of the first players in this year's deep free-agent field to notify the Major League Baseball Players Association of his intention to test the market. He may begin talking with other clubs at any time, but he cannot discuss money and he cannot sign a contract until after the 15-day free-agent filing period ends Nov. 9.He filed early, but that was only because the Orioles have made it clear they will not re-sign him until after the Nov. 17 National League expansion draft.

It may or may not be coincidental that Glenn Davis and all of the Orioles' front office officials are in town for the first time since shortly after the season concluded. But there are indications that the first baseman is close to reaching an agreement on a contract for next year.Davis has just returned from a trip to Israel and Roland Hemond is less than 24 hours removed from a meeting of major-league general managers in Boca Raton, Fla.Hemond, who was accompanied to the GMs' meeting by assistants Frank Robinson and Doug Melvin, has not been directly involved in negotiations.
