On a recent fall day, gardeners at Franz Burda's home were putting in 20,000 tulip bulbs. Once they've bloomed next spring, each bulb will be dug up and donated to charity. The German publisher's three full-time staff members clip and groom the impeccable gardens and emerald-green lawns, as well as tend the raised swimming pool on the $5.1 million estate. For formal dinners, Burda's starched damask cloths are ironed on the tables -- after they are sprinkled with Pellegrino, some say -- before the guests jet in.Palm Beach?

Ask city officials about last weekend's Baltimore Home Festival and they blame its dismal turnout on summer-like weather. Poppycock! If anything, the fine weather -- combined with a daytime Orioles game -- would have provided a splendid backdrop for the festival in the Convention Center, had it been better organized.Hundreds of potential visitors walked by the festival site, but there were no clear signs to pull them in to see more than a hundred exhibits by Baltimore neighborhoods, non-profit organizations and real estate-related private firms.

Success begets traffic jams -- a maxim for modern times.Lines of visitors' cars headed to the recent Maryland Wine Festival at the Carroll County Farm Museum were backed up for a mile along both sides of Md. 140. Upon reaching the ample grasslands, people out for an afternoon of fun in the September sun again had their patience taxed by long lines before they reached the ticket booths. The two-day festival that celebrates Maryland's vinticulture and wineries has become the most popular annual event at the museum, drawing visitors from Canada to California.
