The Duchess of York has hammered out a deal with Buckingham Palace that will give her a royal buyout of $5.5 mil over 25 years, says the author of a new book on Sarah.Chris Hutchins, author of "Fergie Confidential: The Real Story," says the money amounts to hush money because "she knows enormous stories about the family that could be devastating" if revealed. The time length is to ensure her silence over a long time and so she never gets to "feel rich."Mr. Hutchins, who scooped the world on the duchess' 1990 association with Steve Wyatt, says Fergie wants to live in America and has folks already checking out post-royal real estate in Palm Beach, Fla.He also says Queen Elizabeth became convinced Fergie was emotionally unstable after publication of those toe-sucking photos with "financial adviser" John Bryan.

Halfway through the Black Eyed Peas' live show, rapper Taboo hops on a neon-glowing motorcycle and, using suspension wires, rides it out above the crowd — all while singing "Rockin' to the Beat. " "You never expect a flying motorcycle to hover over your head during the show," he said. "It takes the show to a different level. " Inspired by the '80s movie "Tron," the motorcycle is one of the more eyebrow-raising moments in a concert that's loaded with dizzying lights, props and special effects.

If you think you have in-law problems, wait until you see "Fergie & Andrew: Behind the Palace Doors" at 9 tonight on WMAR (Channel 2 ).In NBC's telling, Sarah Ferguson, has nothing but problems. There's trouble with her royal in-laws. Trouble with a vicious group of palace insiders who scheme day and night to destroy her because "she is not of the proper breeding." Trouble with a husband portrayed as a couch potato, who thinks a great night at the castle is spent plopped in front of the TV with his remote control watching war movies.

Today's column is about an important subject that is not really on everyone's mind: the never-ending choices in women's underwear. There was a time when, if I needed underwear, I only needed about 30 seconds to shop for it. It was hanging in a plastic three-pack on a rack in the back of the women's department. My choice was limited to: size. That's because "color" was the ever-unflattering brilliant white. This type of underwear had an elastic waistband that, as its name indicates, came up to the waist, and two similarly, boringly appointed leg holes.

Only a charity event could boast such a bizarre assemblage: British and Northeast Baltimore royalty sitting for a proper tea party with a famous corporate clown in the west side of downtown. Yet there they were yesterday, two of the world's most famous redheads -- Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and Ronald McDonald -- having a spot of tea with Maryland first lady Katie Curran O'Malley. The occasion: to announce a McDonald's charity program that will place a new item -- a $1 donation -- on the Maryland menus of the chain's 500 restaurants in the Baltimore and Washington region.

Sarah, Duchess of York, was on the road again, and feeling vaguely gloomy. She sent her driver into a deli to buy her two cheese and tomato sandwiches slathered with salty butter and two "full-bodied" Coca Colas, none of that diet stuff. The driver, aware of the Duchess' role as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman, asked if she was sure. She insisted. But before chowing down, she called her Weight Watchers adviser on the cell phone and, sounding like someone hoping to be talked off a ledge, told her she was about to gobble it up."

With all the talk about "family values" coming out of the White House these days, you'd think our English cousins across the Atlantic would give a listen. But no: Britain's royal family seems bent as ever on scandal. The latest fillip has Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York and estranged wife of the queen's second son, Prince Andrew, cavorting topless at pool-side with a 37-year-old Texas oil tycoon named John Bryan.Photos of Fergie's dalliance created another predictable round of speculation over the future of the monarchy when they were splashed across newspaper front pages last week.

I have always felt sorry for Queen Elizabeth II.We like royalty in America. Which is ironic when you thinkabout it: American patriots gave up their lives fighting a British monarch at Lexington and Concord so that American citizens could claw each other for invitations to meet one 216 years later.I doubt George Washington would understand. In any case, we will all be polite. A lot more polite than some Britons are.According to Harold Brooks-Baker, editor of "Burke's Peerage," "what Mr. and Mrs. Reagan are going through with Kitty Kelley's book . . . is not very different from what many members of the royal family go through every day of their lives."
