A recap of the Orioles' 6-3 loss to the Red Sox last night: First the worst After watching Garrett Olson struggle last month at Yankee Stadium, the Orioles wanted to see how the rookie left-hander would respond to pitching at Fenway Park. By the end of the first inning last night, they had gotten their answer, and it wasn't good. Olson made a key throwing error in the first and allowed a long three-run homer to Jason Varitek that put the Orioles in a five-run hole. The good news is he settled down after his 31-pitch inning to get into the sixth.

After a long wait, Baltimore is getting some "Satisfaction." The Rolling Stones, who opened their "A Bigger Bang" tour Sunday to more than 30,000 fans at Boston's Fenway Park, will play at 1st Mariner Arena on Feb. 1, 2006, it was announced this morning. The announcement is a major one for the Baltimore concert scene, which typically loses out on acts as large as the Rolling Stones. The last time the Stones played in Baltimore, in 1969, the building was known as the Baltimore Civic Center.

Larry Lucchino, Boston Red Sox president, weaves his way through a Yawkey Way crowd 20 minutes before the start of a game. As he talks excitedly about the "perpetual street fair" going on around him, fans turn away from their cold draft beers to shake his hand and schmooze. He's the Pied Piper of Renovation. It has been 18 months since Boston welcomed a new Red Sox ownership group led by money manager John Henry. To the relief of baseball fans throughout New England, the new owners are trying to save Fenway Park, the team's home since 1912, rather than pursue a new stadium.

Less than 14 hours after beating the Red Sox in 13 innings last night, the Orioles return to Fenway Park to face the Red Sox for an afternoon matinee. Jason Hammel, who has gone at least six innings in four of his five starts this season, will start for the Orioles. That should help an Orioles bullpen that threw eight shutout innings. Five different relievers threw on Friday, including three who threw multiple innings. “They were all pretty short last night,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of the bullpen.

BOSTON - Fenway Park has enjoyed a succession of sellouts any sports organization would envy, but twice this month the sellouts didn't involve baseball. On Sept. 10 and 12, when the Red Sox were out of town, Fenway Park was transformed to a concert setting for Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band. The concerts each drew more than 38,000 people, on nights when the park otherwise would have been empty. Many came from outside the area, filling hotels, bars and restaurants throughout the city.

BOSTON - Even the usually stoic Tony La Russa was having a hard time containing his happiness yesterday when he thought about how the World Series format could help his St. Louis Cardinals. When the series heads to St. Louis for games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary), the Cardinals figure to have a distinct advantage, and both teams know it. With no designated hitter, the Boston Red Sox will move David Ortiz to first base and keep Kevin Millar on the bench. "Doesn't mean we're not going to win," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said, "but we're not sending our best team out."
