Shirley Herzer Feldmann, 72, who was interested in art and music, died Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital of kidney disease.A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, 6428 York Road.Mrs. Feldmann lived in Stoneleigh. A native of Baltimore, the former Shirley Herzer was a graduate of what is now the Notre Dame Preparatory School and an honors graduate of the College of Notre Dame.Her husband of 49 years, Francis J. Feldmann, is retired as vice president of the Security Title Guarantee Company.

Mary Esther R. "Essie" Feldmann, a retired registered nurse and pioneering Rodgers Forge resident, died Sunday of complications from dementia at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. Earlier this month, family and friends gathered to celebrate Mrs. Feldmann's 103rd birthday. She was born Jan. 13, 1910, in Baltimore. The daughter of a carriage maker and a homemaker, Mary Esther Roche was raised in Mount Washington. After graduating from Mount St. Agnes High School in 1929, she earned her nursing degree from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1932.

Chet Feldmann of Annapolis and Old Mill's Melanie Herget are the winners of the 12th Dick Hart Award that goes annually to an upstanding boy and girl basketball player. Each Anne Arundel County boys and girls coach has the opportunity to nominate an unsung hero-type player who exemplifies the character, leadership and team-first attitude that the late Hart exhibited over 30 years as a teacher and coach at Andover High. Hart distinguished himself as a teacher/coach and also the game of basketball as the annual winners of this award do. The Dick Hart committee is made up of former Andover players and students, whose aim is to perpetuate the coach's memory and honor deserving youths at the same time.

The director of the Maryland International Division, the agenc that oversees the state's trade initiatives, has resigned after recent criticism of the way the division was being managed.Mark L. Wasserman, secretary of the Department of Economic and Employment Development, said this morning that Eric Feldmann agreed to resign after the two met on Friday. Wasserman, who has been head of DEED for just more than a week, would not comment on whether he asked for Feldmann's resignation.Feldmann was not available to comment.

Eric Feldmann, the official who started the trade-promoting Maryland International Division in 1988, resigned yesterday.The division, which has 55 employees and a budget of $4.2 million, cuts across existing bureaucratic boundaries in state government to bring foreign investment into the state and to provide Maryland businesses with help in selling abroad.Mr. Feldmann could not be reached for comment.The division is part of the Department of Economic and Employment Development, and Mr. Feldmann submitted his resignation to the man who has headed DEED for the last month or so, Mark Wasserman.

Centennial setters, senior Jennifer Feldmann and junior Kristina Swan, set things up rather nicely at Atholton last night with 19 assists each to put the top-ranked Eagles in the Howard County title match at home tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Eagles beat the No. 5 Raiders in four games, 25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, to advance to the final against No. 3 Glenelg and will be after their 14th championship. The Gladiators, who lost to the Eagles in last year's championship match in four games and are two-time defending champions, advanced last night with a 3-1 victory over Mount Hebron.

She never used the library when she was a student at Goucher College in the 1920s. She was a Ruzicka, after all -- the fifth generation in a family devoted to the bookbinding business. Her father's extensive home library suited her just fine. Years later, when Marie Ruzicka Feldmann was running that Baltimore company, Joseph Ruzicka Inc., her sales staff often visited Goucher's library in hopes of drumming up business. The librarian, Feldmann recalls with a smile, would always ask about her "old friend Marie."

The sudden emergence of sophomore wide receiver John Zabel as an offensive force was a pleasant surprise in La Salle's 3-8 season. Zabel, 6 feet 2, 182 pounds, gave the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Explorers instant offense the moment he stepped on the field as a starter in the third game of the season against the College of New Jersey. The former Mount Hebron standout caught two touchdown passes and rolled up 222 receiving yards on five catches in a come-from-behind, 28-27 victory.

Annapolis boys basketball coach John Brady thought a reporter was joking when he was asked how one of his best three-point shooters, Joe Feldmann, adjusts to being legally blind in his left eye. "I had no idea that he can only see out of the one eye," said Brady, whose No. 1-ranked Panthers are 20-0. "Joe has never said a word about it. He's probably said a hundred words in the three years he's been on the varsity. You have to talk to him or he won't talk." Annapolis baseball coach Larry Brogden had the same reaction as Brady.
