Mike Waddell, whose 2 1/2-year tenure as Towson's athletic director was marked both by the tremendous growth in its football and men's basketball programs and by the controversy surrounding the elimination of men's soccer and the proposed dropping of baseball, is leaving to become a senior associate athletic director at Arkansas. Waddell's departure comes a few months before the school is scheduled to open Tiger Arena and several months after Waddell found himself embroiled in an often nasty debate that ultimately reached the state legislature and was - at least temporarily - resolved with extra funding for the baseball program.

Lillie Chappell was up about $50, then down about the same, and was into her third hour playing a video game — pressing a button on the computer screen and watching tumbling four-leaf clovers, bars, horseshoes, numeral sevens. Compared with slot machines she'd played at Delaware Park, she said this was "pretty much the same. " Chappell, a retiree from Catonsville, wasn't playing at a casino but in a game room at Patapsco Bingo in Baltimore — one of several that have opened in the area in the past year offering cash winnings on computer games.

Frances Smith of Fayetteville, N.C., was looking for a recipe for a cheesecake made in a bundt pan. It had a graham-cracker crust and when the cake was turned out of the pan, the crust was on the top. It was sliced like a regular bundt cake. Cheryl Lisi from West Monroe, N.Y., sent in a recipe she found for a cheesecake that is designed to be made in a bundt pan. It is prepared just like a traditional-style cheesecake except that it is made in a bundt pan, not a springform pan. It makes a beautiful and deliciously rich cake with a nice hint of lemon.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Bowie State linebacker Atcheson Conway just shook his head, unable to believe what had just happened. It wasn't the 17-14 loss to Fayetteville State yesterday in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship game that had the sophomore linebacker so stunned. It was that Bowie State watched the Broncos fumble nine times, but the Bulldogs couldn't recover any of them. "That made a huge difference," Conway said. "We weren't able to take advantage of any turnovers.
