Robert Leeman, head professional at Bonnie View Country Club, reeled off six birdies in turning in a 2-under-par 70 to lead 32 pros yesterday in the Old South CC pro-invitation tournament in Lothian.The annual event set area one-day records for purse ($10,300) and individual first-place prize ($4,000).Mark Evenson, assistant professional at Rolling Road Golf Club, had six birdies, too, in posting 71.Professional John Dodson, from Twin Shields Golf Club in Dunkirk, combined with Old South amateurs Jeff McKnight, Jack Van Wie, Jim Van Wie, and Bill Van Wie to win the pro-am team prize with a 60.Farmington InvitationFirst-round leader Amy Ellertson, from Charlottesville, Va., slipped to a 77, but her two-round total of 150 enabled her to share the lead with Catalina Durall, of Richmond, Va., heading into today's final round of the women's tournament at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville.

PATRICIA A. (GRIFFIN) PHILBRICK, 70 of Farmington, PA, died Friday, August 28, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Donna (Crispens) Ray, where she was lovingly cared for the past several years during her illnesses. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 27, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Dorothea Leineweber Griffin and Donald Laird Griffin. Retired from the Wal-Mart in Shrewsbury, PA., she enjoyed cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a life member of the Red Lion, PA. Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of United States.

Hardisty was formerCommander in Chief of the US Pacific Command, served as the Director of Operations for the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and in 1987 served as Vice Chief of Naval Operations. ROBERT J. LAPIDUS, 78 Clothing retailer Robert J. Lapidus, who turned a surplus business into Bob's Stores, a major clothing retailer in the Northeast, died Friday at a Farmington, Conn., hospital. The entrepreneur had more than 30 stores. He started his first store, Bob's Surplus, in Middletown, Conn., in 1954 when he was 25. The store operated on his philosophy: "Treat all customers with respect and dignity, and they will return again and again." Customers did just that, prompting Mr. Lapidus to move to a larger location across the street; that stored burned in 1967.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Dirk Schultz blistered the Farmington Country Club course for a 6-under-par 64, one shot off the course record, and came from five shots off the pace to capture the annual Middle Atlantic PGA Section Players Championship yesterday. Schultz, head pro at Beaver Creek Country Club in Hagerstown, finished 71-64-135, and had a two-stroke margin on runner-up David Long, CC Woodmore, 68-69-137. Teaching pros Wayne DeFrancesco, Woodholme CC, and Mark Evenson, Suburban Club, tied for third at 138. As a result, DeFrancesco clinched MAPGA Player of the Year for the fourth time in the last eight years, holding off Schultz and David Hutsell, an assistant pro at Columbia CC from Towson.

RUPERT H. AUSTIN JR., 77, of Avon, CT died in his home on Tuesday April 8, 2003. Beloved husband, of 29 years, of Doris C. Austin, who was raised in Baltimore. On the day before he was charged with first-degree murder, George Huguely V walked the fairways and greens of Charlottesville's exclusive Farmington Country Club, the Blue Ridge Mountains at his back. The University of Virginia men's lacrosse team, ranked best in the nation, had just won the last regular-season game of Huguely's senior year. The 22-year-old and some teammates had gathered at the club with their fathers to celebrate the storybook ending and to look forward to the NCAA tournament.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Frank Ferguson, general manager at Montgomery Country Club in Laytonsville, highlighted his score of 66 with an eagle-3 to take the first-round lead in the Middle Atlantic PGA Section Players Championship at Farmington Country Club yesterday. Only four players beat par 70 for the 6,631 yards on a beautiful fall day, where slick greens sent many scores soaring in the select 65-player field. David Long, from the CC of Woodmore, shot 68 (three birdies, one bogey). A stroke back were Mark Evenson, a former winner of this event, and David Hutsell, a Towson resident from Columbia CC. Ferguson, a former head pro champion, had three front-nine birdies on putts inside of 8 feet and eagled the 563-yard 16th on a chip shot.

Jack Snyder, recently cited as a Master Professional by the PGA of America, whipped around wind-swept Eagle's Nest in 3-under-par 69 yesterday, beating a field of 78 attempting to make it past the first stage of qualifying for the U.S. Open championship.Nine qualifiers will move on to the 36-hole sectional June 6 at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville.There was a playoff at 72 for the final spot, with William Lanier III, of Farmington CC in Charlottesville, Va., making it with a two-putt par -- the second from six feet -- at the second extra hole.
