Barry Lee Loman, of Mount Airy, who pleaded guilty in February to false imprisonment and battery, initially was charged with burglary. He received a suspended four-year prison sentence Tuesday after a plea bargain. A story in yesterday's Carroll County edition incorrectly stated the initial charge. The Sun regrets the error.A professional golf instructor who pleaded guilty in February to the false imprisonment and battery of a Westminster girl last summer received a suspended four-year prison sentence and was placed on five years of supervised probation yesterday.

A 22-year-old Sykesville man has been charged with theft, a weapons violation and two counts each of rape, false imprisonment and battery, in connection with the Westminster woman he was living with.Craig Collins, of the 5700 block of Hodges Road, was arrested Wednesday and held on $20,000 bond following a bail review hearing in district court.Mr. Collins is charged with holding the 23-year-old woman in her apartment for five hours on Aug. 12, where he allegedly attempted to rape her at knifepoint.

Gary C. Cronin, the Manchester man jailed overnight in August because he showed up in court $8.50 short to pay a fine and costs stemming from a parking ticket, is suing the state for $500,000.In a three-count negligence and false imprisonment lawsuit filed Friday in Carroll Circuit Court, Mr. Cronin, 28, says he "was subjected to the extreme humiliation of being photographed, fingerprinted, searched, re-searched and strip-searched" because of Carroll District Judge Donald M. Smith's decision to put him in jail rather than give him eight more days to pay $15 in court costs.

6 indicted in Penitentiary riotSix inmates have been indicted on charges growing out of a riot at the Maryland Penitentiary last July 16 and 17, city State's Attorney Stuart Simms has announced.All six were charged yesterday with attempted escape, riot and possession of a handgun.Two other inmates were seriously injured and two correctional officers were taken hostage during the uprising.The indicted prisoners were identified as William Henry Daniels, 31, serving a life sentence plus eight years for murder; Joseph Charles Miller, 36, serving life without parole; Richard Allan Miner, 25, serving 30 years for assault with intent to murder; Clarence Mouzone, serving a double life sentence plus 30 years for two counts of murder; Ronnie Warthan, 30, serving 103 years for two counts of second-degree murder; and Michael Alexander Watson, 34, serving a life for murder.

Kevin Mitchell arrested on rape chargeSan Francisco Giants outfielder Kevin Mitchell, the 1989 National League MVP, was free on bail yesterday after being arrested on charges of raping an acquaintance at his home in Chula Vista, Calif., authorities said. Mitchell posted bail late Saturday night after being booked for investigation of rape, battery and false imprisonment.The rape was alleged to have taken place at 4 a.m. PST Saturday. Mitchell, 30, was arrested at 5:30 p.m., and he posted bail about five hours later.

Two Harford men convicted in Harford Circuit Court for raping a pregnant 19-year-old Havre de Grace woman were each sentenced to 20 yearsin prison Tuesday.Richard L. Wallace, of Aberdeen, and Christopher U. Eley, of Havre de Grace, were given the sentences after their motions for new trials were denied.Eley, 21, was convicted of first-degree rape, assault with intentto rape, battery, assault and false imprisonment following a March 8trial.Wallace, 21, was convicted of first-degree rape, assault with intent to rape, assault, assault and battery and false imprisonment after a April 9 trial.

A 19-year-old Baltimore man yesterday became the second person sentenced to prison for raping a 16-year-old blind girl last March in a car in the Harundale Mall parking lot.Philip Michael Saunders was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in prison by Circuit Judge Raymond G. Thieme Jr. His co-defendant, Byron Charles "Bear" Morrow, was sentenced two weeks ago to 18 years in prison.In separate trials in September, both men were convicted of first-degree rape, a crime carrying a maximum penalty of life in prison.

He kicked her.One day, he soaked Betty with lighter fluid and threatened to set her on fire. That's what it says in the original police report.Other documents say John -- that's the defendant's name -- held his former girlfriend captive for two weeks.
