The Fallston Flames U10 boys soccer team completed a successful season with back-to-back tournament championships recently. The Flames won the EASL Open in Baltimore County and then took home the Fallston Cup. In addition, in early October they won the River Soccer Club Columbus Day Tournament in Ocean City. The No. 7 Fallston girls soccer team made it clear throughout Saturday's Class 2A state championship game that it wouldn't back down against two-time defending champion Middletown. In an evenly-played game dominated by defense, it took a perfectly placed shot coming with 23 seconds left before the Knights from Frederick County had the needed goal to successfully defend their championship. Junior midfielder Mary Pritts solved the defensive puzzle, taking a feed from Mary-Kate Afzali and firing a shot from 22 yards that found the lower left corner.

It's just crazy enough to work. It's not the first thing to come to mind when considering things that might end up being built at the intersection of Routes 1 and 152 in Fallston. Indeed, it might be one of the last. Mike Euler, developer of the burgeoning Aumar Village shopping center at the Fallston intersection is proposing, of all things, a campground geared toward recreational vehicles. "In today's new economic world, people are using their boats and RVs as a second home," Euler pointed out when asked about the plan.

Fallston junior Jenna Caldwell scored twice and the Cougars captured the Class 1A state championship for the second straight year with a 2-0 victory over Crisfield at Washington College. "I'm just really glad, so happy we won," said Caldwell, a junior forward playing her first year on varsity. "Everyone on this team worked so hard to build our chemistry during the year and it has paid off. " Caldwell's first goal broke a scoreless tie 1:53 into the second half when she tapped in a crossing pass from senior Danielle McDiarmid.

Maryland State Police at the Bel Air Barrack are still looking for a man who robbed the BB&T Bank on Route 1 in Fallston Monday morning. Another surveillance camera photo of the robber, who police say pulled out a shotgun inside the bank, was issued late Wednesday night, as investigators stepped up their efforts to identify and find the robber. As in the two earlier photos issued following the robbery on Monday, the robber wore a white hard hat and safety vest, which made him appear to be a construction worker.

Sparrows Point's first trip to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association field hockey state semifinals was a memorable one, but unfortunately for the Pointers it wasn't a winning one. Crisfield won the game 2-0 Monday night at Broadneck, but Sparrows Point had a season to remember. . The Pointers won their Baltimore County division for the second straight year, beat county rival Loch Raven for the first time and won their first 1A South Regional Championship.

A couple of areas of Harford County particularly hard hit by power outages from Storm Sandy were Fallston and Fountain Green, where many businesses and homes were still dark Tuesday night. Wednesday morning, however, power had restored to much of Fallston and to Fountain Green, and life appeared to be getting back to normal. It was a far different story Tuesday, night, however. The entire Route 1 commercial strip in Fallston from the Bel Air Bypass to the Baltimore County line did not have power around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

North Harford escaped from Fallston with a 14-13 victory Friday night, having stopped the host Cougars when they attempted a game-winning 2-point conversion with 20 seconds left in regulation. Trailing 14-7 with just over two minutes remaining, Fallston got the ball back on its 32 after a North Harford punt and drove 68 yards on seven plays, with quarterback Brendan Weinhold capping the drive by scoring on a 3-yard scramble. Needing to convert an extra point to tie, the Cougars instead opted to go for the win with a 2-point conversion.

Ijeoma Igwe had 28 kills and six aces to power Seton Keough over visiting John Carroll in straight sets in girls volleyball Monday. Rachel Robinson added 36 assists for the Gators, who remained undefeated and improved their record to 14-0. The scores were 25-11, 25-12 and 25-20. No. 15 Archbishop Spalding 3, McDonogh 0: Kristen Seeba had 23 kills and 13 digs to lead the Cavaliers (12-4) over the visiting Eagles in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland quarterfinal.

The Bel Air Bobcats beat the visiting Fallston Cougars, 2-1, Tuesday night in Chesapeake (upper) Division boys soccer. The victory propelled Bel Air to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in Chesapeake Division play. Fallston fell to 7-4-2 overall and 2-1-2 against Chesapeake opponents. Bel Air, which clinched the upper division title with a win over North Harford Friday, led the Cougars at halftime, 1-0. Andrew Marinich and Drew Adams each scored once for the Bobcats, while Martin Palacious had a pair of assists in the victory.
