Fallston (10-0) wrapped up a second straight Harford County title last night, beating C. Milton Wright, 11-8, in a contest that was not that close. The Cougars -- junior Patrick Elliott in particular -- put this one out of reach in the third period. The defense shut down what recently had been a high-powered C.M. Wright attack, and Elliott scored three times as the score reached 9-3 going to the last quarter. The visitors still led by six goals, 11-5, inside of the final three minutes, before Wright got untracked on two goals by Cory Smith and one by Steve Wynne.

Shane Dougherty continued a streak of scoring at least one goal in every game when his 15-yard shot into the far right corner of the net pushed visiting Fallston past C. Milton Wright, 1-0, in a Harford County League game last night. The win kept the Cougars unbeaten at 9-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in league play.Dougherty, a senior striker, was moved to halfback part way through the second half after a tight marking job by Chad Bowker. It wasn't long after, at 31 minutes 11 seconds, that Dougherty capitalized on an opening to rifle a shot away from goalkeeper Tim Hilyard.

Until yesterday, Fallston's girls soccer team never had beaten Hammond. The No. 4 Cougars had come within two goals each of the past two years, but they never maintained the intensity to knock off Hammond. All that changed yesterday when the Cougars dealt the unranked and rebuilding Golden Bears their worst-ever defeat, 8-0."What goes around comes around," said Hammond coach Dave Guetler, who graduated nine starters from last year's state Class 1A-2A finalist team. "They're very fast, and we're not as fast as we used to be, and this is a game built on speed."

Fallston's Tammy Kloiber was prepared for the attack of nervousness this time, but the result was the same.A year ago, Kloiber made a clutch save in the penalty stroke shootout at the state Class 2A field hockey tournament finals.Yesterday, she stopped two shots in the stroke-off as Fallston downed Middletown, 2-1, in the state semifinals."I didn't know what was happening last year, but I was really prepared for this one," said Kloiber, the Cougars' junior keeper. "We have practiced penalty strokes every day and I was ready.

The offense of Fallston's field hockey team has received the most attention, especially last year when the Cougars won their fourth Class 2A state title. But Julie Haire, the senior sweeper for the No. 2 Cougars (12-0, 8-0), never has forgotten her role on defense.Although the Cougars defense often is overlooked, consider this. Until Fallston gave up a goal three weeks ago against North Harford, opponents were held scoreless for 20 straight games that dated back to early September 1993.Haire has been the mainstay on the back line for the past two years.

For Fallston to win its second state girls lacrosse championship, the Cougars were going to have to get past two-time defending champion Winters Mill for the second time this season. Jenna Mosketti sparked the senior-laden Cougars to a quick three-goal lead and they held Winters Mill scoreless for nearly 23 minutes through the middle of the game to beat the Falcons, 13-9, for the state Class 2A-1A championship Tuesday night at UMBC. "I'm proud of our defense," said Fallston coach Mike McTeague, whose team also won a 2009 state title.
