The captain of the Fallston High School baseball team and a teammate were killed early yesterday when they were struck by a car while walking along a two-lane highway in Harford County.Christian James Leonard, 18, the captain, and Eric Christopher Rothgeb, 16, both of Fallston, were walking on the shoulder of Fallston Road -- Route 152 -- when they were hit about 4 a.m. by a 1992 Jeep Wrangler that crossed the center line in the 1500 block, a Harford County sheriff's spokesman said.Authorities said the driver, William Smith, 20, of the 3100 block of Wellington Way in Baldwin drove to a grocery store several miles away to call his family.

A nominating committee of former educators, students and citizens has selected the 10 finalists for the Harford County Teacher of the Year Award.The winner will be announced at a banquet Thursday.County businesses have come together to honor the finalists and the winner.The Bayou Restaurant in Havre de Grace is sponsoring the banquet for the finalists, guests and officials.This year's winner will receive the free use of a new Buick for one year from Boyle Buick of Abingdon, along with a clock, a watch and other gifts.

In their first official appearance last week, the 1995 student pages ate breakfast with Harford County legislators.The next time they meet, the teen-agers may be making coffee for the lawmakers. But that will be only a small part of the duties the pages will perform while they're working in Annapolis during the 1995 General Assembly."Although it's a lot of fun, it's a lot of hard work," said Mary Catherine Adams, a 1992 Bel Air High School graduate and former student page. She shared her experiences with the five new pages and one alternate at the Tuesday morning meeting.

Candy Credito and Becky Robinson, Fallston High School seniors on the same track academically but with divergent sports backgrounds, have received full athletic scholarships to NCAA Division I universities.Credito is an honors student with a 4.0 grade-point average, president of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society, and an All-County athlete in three sports. She will concentrate her athletic time on basketball at the University of North Carolina-Asheville.Credito expects to major in international business, followed by graduate studies.

John Carroll School newspaper honoredThe John Carroll School student newspaper, Patriot, received the General Excellence Award for the best overall high school newspaper at the 1994 Student Journalism Contest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The contest was sponsored by the Catholic Review.This marks the second year in a row that the Patriot has won in the general excellence category. The newspaper captured first place in five of the 10 categories.Joan of Arc pupil gets poem publishedA poem by Brad Lhotsky, a seventh-grade student at St. Joan of Arc school in Aberdeen, will appear in the 1994 edition of VTC Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans," to be published this month.

There is something about a state tournament and a Fallston High School offense that just don't mix.The Cougars (21-1) came up empty for the third straight year yesterday, bowing to Middletown, 45-30, in a Class 2A girls semifinal at UMBC. It was the 50th straight victory for the defending 2A champion (22-0) from Frederick County.This was Fallston's fifth state appearance. In 1992, it suffered a Class 1A final loss to Williamsport, and last year it lost to Williamsport in a Class 1A semifinal.

Visiting Washington Catherine Heimerl, a student at John Carroll School, was recently named a Sudbrink Scholar.The Donald L. Sudbrink Scholarship is given annually on the basis of academic excellence as demonstrated by the student's grades and test scores from the Catholic school's entrance exam.The scholarship was established in 1990 in honor of John Carroll's former principal and is renewable based on continued academic excellence.Fallston High graduate joins EARTH ClubGina Marconi, daughter of Enzo and Arlene Marconi of Fallston, is a member of the EARTH Club at Lynchburg College, a private school in central Virginia.

The third time was the charm for Fallston High School and coach Alice Puckett yesterday, as a goal by Stacey French earned a 1-0 victory over Bel Air in a meeting of unbeaten field hockey teams.Although Fallston had won the two previous games between the two at home, the past two games at Bel Air had ended in ties.The result pushed the No. 2 Cougars to 7-0-1 and dropped the No. 8 Bobcats to 6-1-1.The only goal came 5:40 into the second half when French got a stick on the ball out of a scramble in front of the goal and shot it through a defender's legs.

Fallston Middle students are scheduled to start school tomorrow, two weeks late.The school, at Route 152 and Carrs Mill Road, failed a critical fire safety inspection Aug. 23 and was not finished by the Aug. 30 school opening date. That inspection, by a state fire marshal, found seven fire safety violations. Most were due to incomplete construction.Allen L. Ward, deputy chief fire marshal, said his office was satisfied with tests made late last week of the sprinkler system, fire alarm system and emergency generators that provide lighting and power during a fire.
