Emerging from graduation ceremonies, and from their parents' proud, lingering embraces, the kids at Fallston High School floated rapturously across a suburban parking lot the other evening and discovered unanticipated greetings from - Ugh! - the American workplace."Summer Work," read stickers placed on hundreds of car windows outside the auditorium where they'd been handed their diplomas only moments earlier. "Full-time/part-time. Guaranteed pay, $10.75 starting rate."For those with nothing on their minds more immediately pressing than the quickest route to the various oblivions, liquid and otherwise, of Ocean City, this was a sobering reminder:Oh, yeah.

Baldwin, a small community straddling Baltimore and Harford counties, is the type of area you drive through without taking notice. The area's name appears only on the post office, Baldwin Mill Road and Baldwin Estates, and the main roads through the community -- Pleasantville Road, Sunshine Avenue and Long Green Pike -- take people to more populated and popular places like Fallston, Bel Air, Hunt Valley and Towson. But to the roughly 5,100 people who live in the 21013 ZIP code area -- on both sides of the Little Gunpowder River and the protected lands of Gunpowder Falls State Park -- there are plenty of reasons to explain why they've made this area their home.

Up a creek: Some Anne Arundel County residents say Fox Creek should be dredged to improve water quality and give boaters access from the Severn River. Other residents, and some environmentalists, oppose the plan. A panel that includes Gov. Martin O'Malley has been asked to decide the matter. Right to vote: Like other members of the Harford County school board, D.J. Sigworth takes in hours of policy debates and PowerPoint presentations. But when the talking is done, Sigworth, the board's student member, cannot vote.

Every other Monday night during the school year, Fallston High School senior D.J. Sigworth attends the Harford County school board meeting. Like the other eight board members, he sits through jargon-laden curriculum discussions, debates over budget cuts and a string of Power Point presentations. Then, when the talking is done, the other eight members cast their votes. Sigworth, the board's sole student member, cannot. He is prohibited by state law from voting. And he wants very much to change that.

The lush 12-acre field, bordered by huge oaks and a rippling creek, would have been the perfect setting for a country house, with plenty of room for a few horses to gallop around. That, at least, was Ann Paszkiewicz's vision six years ago, when she paid $250,000 for the property near Fallston High School in Harford County. But yesterday, Paszkiewicz and other residents of the area who have been fighting a proposed natural-gas pipeline got the full measure of what the construction might mean to their properties.

Eight seniors at Fallston High School joined the school's swim team with high hopes. Five joined as freshmen, two as sophomores and one as a junior. First, they set their sights on winning the county meet. They achieved their goal four years in a row. Then, despite facing adversity, they set a goal to win the state championship when it was initiated in 2007. And they did. They repeated the feat this year. "These boys stuck together and worked as a team," said Sheri Huppenthal, one of the team's two coaches.

The 11 members of the Fallston High School Dance Team have the same mindset when they compete. They practice hard before the competition, and then it's all about team spirit, said AnnaMarie Neunabor, one of the team's three captains. "When we compete, we go to have fun," Neunabor said. "If we win, we win, and if we don't, then we don't. We never know how we'll do in a competition, we just know we're going to do our best." The odds seemed to be against the team this year because they lost six of their senior members last year.

2000 is a year recalled fondly by members of Fallston High School's dance team club. At the same time, it's one the dancers would like to forget. It was the year when the school founded the team. It also was the year when the dance troupe, led by a science teacher with no dance expertise, performed at just four school athletic functions and finished 31st out of 36 teams at a regional competition. "We didn't know what we were doing, but we made do with what we had," said Carrie Cummings, an earth science teacher who has been the coach of the team since the beginning.
