Kerstin Schneider and Alex Dzwonchyk Edward Schneider, of Maple Lawn, and Michelle Ward, of Gaithersburg, announce the engagement of their daughter, Kerstin Lynn Schneider, to Alexander Wayne Dzwonchyk, son of Wayne and Melanie Dzwonchyk, of Laurel. John Johnson could have retired from the Washington Navy Yard years ago, but he loved the work. Richard Michael Ridgell, a former Maryland state trooper who helped train police in Iraq, was devoted to his daughters. Vishnu Pandit, who came to the United States to build a better life for his family, was proud of his quarter-century working for the U.S. Navy. All were gunned down Monday in one of the worst mass killings ever on a U.S. military installation. As investigators continued Tuesday to sift clues into the motivations of alleged shooter Aaron Alexis, details began to emerge of the women and men authorities say he shot to death.

DORIAN LEIGH, 91 Early supermodel Dorian Leigh, an early supermodel who made Revlon's 1950s "Fire and Ice" cosmetics line famous, died Monday at a nursing home in Falls Church, Va. Ms. Leigh was among the first models who signed with the Ford Agency.

A story in yesterday's Howard County edition of The Sun incorrectly reported the outcome of two court hearings. Cases against Chang Hui Deramo of Falls Church, Va., and Jem Soon Price of Fulton were placed on the District Court's inactive docket. Neither woman pleaded guilty to charges against her.

Services for J. Joseph Goheen, an official with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and a former resident of Baltimore, will be held at noon tomorrow at the Western Presbyterian Church, 19906 H St. N.W., Washington.Mr. Goheen, assistant chief of the FDIC's corporate training branch since 1978, died of cancer Friday at the Hospice of Washington at the age of 49. He had lived the past 12 years in Falls Church, Va.Born in Quinwood, W.Va., Mr. Goheen was reared in Baltimore. He was a 1960 graduate of City College and received his undergraduate degree four years later from what is now Towson State University.

Triathlon Winterroth, Cairns win 21.52-mile competition Benjamin Winterroth of Silver Spring and Hilary Cairns of Washington took home victories at TriColumbia's third annual Celebrating Heroes Sprint Triathlon on Sunday at Centennial Lake Park in Columbia. More than 1,000 endurance athletes, including both able-bodied and physically challenged athletes, participated in the race, which consisted of a 0.62-mile swim, 17.5-mile bike ride and 3.4-mile run. Winterroth, 31, won the men's division with a time of 1 hour, 20 minutes, 50 seconds, defeating the defending champion and course record holder, Anthony Van Lierop . Cairns, 42, was the top female finisher, with a time of 1:30:55.

Virginia Whittlesey, a retired teacher and community volunteer, died of congestive heart failure March 29 at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The former Roland Park resident was 90. Born Virginia Markell King and raised in Bolton Hill, she was a 1940 graduate of the Bryn Mawr School and earned a degree in early-childhood education from Vassar College. She made her debut at the Bachelors Cotillon. During World War II she worked at a day care center for children of defense workers.

Native Londoner Kimberly Marie Freeman lives and works 200 miles north of Baltimore, but she's enthusiastically joining the effort to save one of the city's cultural treasures. Shutting the Edgar Allan Poe House, she says with a hint of exasperation, would be a shabby way to treat such an internationally renowned figure. "There would be outrage in England if anyone ever considered shutting down Shakespeare's home," said Freeman, artistic director for New York-based Bedlam Ensemble, a performance group putting on several shows in Manhattan this month and next to raise money for the beleaguered museum.

Merle Werner, 91, believed to have been the last surviving journalist who accompanied the Allied invasion on D-Day and filed one of the first reports from the beach at Normandy, died May 19 in Falls Church, Va. Mr. Werner, working for United Press, crossed the English Channel with the 9th Air Force Engineers, waded through 100 yards of hip-deep water with his portable typewriter to Utah Beach, and wrote his first report from a foxhole that evening....

A 53-year-old Anne Arundel County man received a 10-year prison sentence in federal court in Virginia yesterday for trying to lure a federal agent posing as a 13-year-old girl into sex. U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema in Alexandria sentenced Willard Temple Acker of Edgewater to the prison term followed by 20 years' supervised release. According to court documents, Acker began an instant-messaging chat Feb. 21 with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl from Fairfax, Va. In fact, authorities said, Acker was chatting with an undercover FBI agent.
