Fallfest opens today Westminster Fallfest 2003 begins today at the Westminster City Playground off Longwell Avenue. Billed as "the biggest charitable event of Carroll County," the festival supports designated local charities with proceeds earned during the four-day event. The 25th annual festival continues through Sunday with rides, games, food, vendors and entertainment as follows: TODAY: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.: Kid's Court open, scarecrow making, Super Ride Night ($12)

Today is the last chance to visit the annual Westminster FallFest from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the City Playground and the Longwell parking lot.The attractions will begin with train rides leaving the station at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1, 3 and 4 p.m.. Continuous live entertainment events will be offered on the playground, Longwell and LocustMall stages.Bands playing on the playground stage include "Chasmo" at noon, aJamaican steel band at 1 p.m. and "String Band America" at 4 p.m.; musical performances at the Longwell stage will be the children's choir of Priestland Church of God at noon and "Whirligig" at 1:30 p.m.Locust Mall will feature the Gingham Squares at 1:30 p.m. and the Westminster Municipal Band at 3 p.m.Also featured at the Longwell stage will be an aerobics demonstration at 12:30 p.m., Roger Lindsay'smagic at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., a bicycle performance by Totally Tricks at 3:30 p.m., Shoepy the Clown at 4:30 p.m. and Kent Goble at 5 p.m.

The 28th annual Westminster Fallfest, a welcome to autumn, opens with a parade today and several new events during the week. Fallfest provides thousands of dollars to nonprofit organizations each year. This year's charities are Carroll Hospice, Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County, Missions of Mercy and Residents Attacking Drugs. The first new event is a Fallfest Road Mile Race starting at 4 p.m. just before the parade. The Central Maryland Athletic Club is hosting the race along the parade route from Monroe Street to Pennsylvania Avenue to Main Street to East Middle School on Longwell Avenue.

Kevin and Karen Stewart weren't voted the homecoming king and queen during their high school years. But they'll be wearing a crown and tiara this week. Last month, the Stewarts were chosen the King and Queen of the annual Westminster Fallfest, which takes place this year Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 22-25 in the downtown area. The Stewarts' long record of service to the Westminster community was the integral factor in earning the award. If the slight drop in temperature over the past couple of weeks hasn't persuaded you that autumn is almost here, news of the Westminster Fallfest will be the clincher.Beginning Thursday evening, the city of Westminster will have its 18th annual fall festival with a variety of activities for the family.A parade led by Mayor Benjamin Brown and members of the Westminster Town Council will start at 7 p.m. and serve as the official start of the four-day event.The parade and its many mummers will begin their march at Western Maryland College and proceed down Main Street before stopping at the entrance to the Westminster City Park and Playground on Longwell Avenue.

It's going to be fun, fun, fun for the next four days as the city celebrates autumn with its Fallfest '91, starting off with the parade at 7 p.m. tomorrow.Grand marshals of the parade will be three female and three male veterans of the Persian Gulf war, representing all Carroll countians who served in the Middle East last winter, said Carol Donovan, event coordinator."We have the Boumi Temple, lots of horses, floats, high school bands, a bagpipe band, Akitas on Parade with their dressed-up dogs, clowns, jugglers and magicians in the parade," Donovan said.
