Pete Caringi scored the game-winner in the 25th minute on a rebound in front of the box as the host No. 9 Calvert Hall boys soccer team upset top-ranked McDonogh, 1-0, on Wednesday. Catonsville standout forward Peyton Johnson has incredible ball skills, 20-20 vision of the field and a shot that's both heavy and precise. On Tuesday night against visiting Loch Raven, however, the All-Metro senior's most important quality was persistence. Frustrated throughout regulation by sticky marking from Loch Raven defender Sarah Krejcik and save after save by All-Metro senior goalie Danielle DeLisle, Johnson made the most of an overtime chance in tight quarters. Making a strong run to goal, she received a short cross from senior Becca Garman and promptly placed a shot to the lower left corner from 10 yards with 4:28 left in the first overtime to give the No. 13 Comets a 1-0 win over the Raiders.

Arundel quarterback Billy Cosh needed 54 seconds to tie the Maryland public school record of 80 career touchdown passes and 4:01 to break it Friday night. Cosh led the No. 3 Wildcats (6-0) to a 75-19 rout of visiting Glen Burnie. He finished the night with seven touchdowns, and 85 for his career, on 16 of 19 passing for 267 yards. He had one carry for 8 yards. Cosh left the game after 1 1/2 quarters. The previous mark for touchdown passes was held by Sherwood's Deontay Twymann and Friendly's Joe Haden, who both set it during the 2006 state finals.

The No. 11 Hereford girls soccer team got off to a rare fast start yesterday against Baltimore County rival and No. 13 Perry Hall, as midfielder Lauren Adams scored in the fourth minute, Lilly Novak added a highlight goal later in the half and the Bulls showed a strong finishing kick to come away with a 4-1 win over the visiting Gators. Hereford improves to 9-1-1 this season, remaining undefeated in the county, while handing Perry Hall (6-3) its first league loss. Adams placed a shot high to the near post from the left side for the early lead, and the Bulls made it 2-0 when center midfielder Anna Curreri won a ball at midfield and sent a through ball down the left side to Abby Noble, whose left-footed cross to the far post found Novak in stride for what proved to be the game-winning header.

Senior Day at C. Milton Wright didn't turn out the way the Mustangs' field hockey team hoped Wednesday. Its Harford County rival, Fallston, a team it had taken to double overtime several times over the past five years without winning, was on deck. The hillside was spray-painted in honor of the team's seniors, saying, "We'll miss you. Good Luck," and the sidelines were filled with fans. But the luck wasn't there. No. 9 Fallston won, 5-1. "Every single alumni girl is waiting to hear if we beat Fallston today," C. Milton Wright coach Bonnie Schnell said.

All-Metro defender Lisa Blue returned to form and recorded three goals and two assists to lead No. 2 Garrison Forest to a 6-0 victory over host St. Paul's in field hockey Saturday. Blue suffered a concussion two weeks ago at St. Mary's. She returned to action Thursday when Garrison Forest (9-1-2) played No. 8 Notre Dame Prep. In that game, she demonstrated her fine stick work and defensive skills, but was unable to find a goal, as the teams played to a scoreless tie. But against St. Paul's, Blue found her offensive game, scoring two of her three goals in the second half.

Third-ranked Mount St. Joseph had the daunting task of playing top-ranked McDonogh without three starters in Friday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference matchup. Gaels coach Mike St. Martin shuffled his lineup and moved 6-foot-2 forward Dave Arnold into the midfield to give the Gaels more height to win balls out of the air. The Gaels also relied on their top playmaker, Geaton Caltabiano, and some of the younger players to give the team a spark. The changes worked, as Caltabiano scored once in each half - including the game-winner with just under 10 minutes left in the game - to give the host Gaels a 2-1 victory over the Eagles, who also are ranked No. 1 nationally.

Christi Laite had a great season last year, leading Severna Park to an 18-3 record in volleyball. The only problem was that all three losses came against county rival Broadneck, with one in the county championship and another in the regional championship. Broadneck went on to win the state Class 4A title. Severna Park went home. Last night, Laite and her teammates got a measure of revenge, as the host and fifth-ranked Falcons (5-1) defeated the No. 3 Bruins, 25-27, 25-21, 27-25, 25-14, in a key match.
