Frederick Keys ace right-hander Jake Arrieta took a long, hard look at his glowing statistics this season and said of his chances of being promoted to Baltimore next year: "I think it's going to be hard for them [the Orioles] to keep me in the minor leagues if I keep pitching this well." Arrieta, 6 feet 4 and 225 pounds, is on a roll these days and had every right to be confident after he had shut down the Salem Avalanche on two hits and no runs over seven innings Thursday night. He struck out six and walked three in an 8-0 victory for the Keys.

However, we still are plugged heavily into softball.Believe it or not, one summer league still is trying to close its books.The Killer Bees and Random House, divisional winners in the Carroll County Women's League seemingly eons ago, square off tonight in the first game of a best-of-three championship series at Springfield State Hospital in Eldersburg.Having postponed this meeting at least five times because rain and difficulties in getting the players out, league president Jim Hoffman said this is it."

Fred McCathorine needed a hook. Not the kind that is curved and metal. This hook is round and orange with plenty of bounce. McCathorine, the director of sports ministry for First Baptist Church of Guilford, on Columbia's eastern edge, has been coaching the First Baptist Crusaders' youth basketball program since 1987. He has found that basketball is a great way to get young men involved in the church. "Ours is an outreach program," said McCathorine, 51, a Columbia resident who is vice president of operations for Trigen Energy Corp.
