The Rev. James Donald Tallie, who established and led the West Baltimore congregation of Holy Faith Church of God in Christ for nearly 50 years, died of cancer Jan. 2 at Chesapeake Hospice House in Linthicum. He was 85 and lived in Glen Burnie. Born in Oakville, N.C., where he spent his early years, Mr. Tallie's interest in becoming a clergyman began as a child. "I had a love for the Lord and the church at an early age. I loved to go to the Locust Grove Baptist Church with my parents, and I loved playing church with my youngest sister," he wrote in a family memoir.

When Enron imploded, Arthur Andersen collapsed and the accounting profession got a deep gash in its starch-and-bow-tie image, perhaps few people understood better than Sharon Gary Finney. With a doctorate in accounting and a research specialty in ethics and fraudulent financial reporting, she recognized the motivations - the greed of top officials, the reluctance of the rank-and-file to speak up. As an academic, she's not surprised. As an investor, she's not overly concerned. "Accountants have been under scrutiny before," said Finney, chairwoman of the accounting and finance department at Morgan State University.

HARBIN, China - As snow swirled around the green dome of the Virgin Mary Patron Orthodox Church one recent Sunday morning, 77-year-old Valentina Han led the congregation inside through a short, candlelight service. Bundled up in heavy wool coats, sweaters and hats, some of the three dozen parishioners simply hummed along as Han's Slavonic words echoed through the nave. Most of the congregation's Russian-speaking members died long ago. Some of their descendants still attend but don't understand Church Slavonic, the liturgical language of the Russian Orthodox faith.

On the last day of October, nearly 500 years ago, a German priest named Martin Luther approached the Castle Church in Wittenberg and nailed to the door his 95 Theses, a list of theological challenges to the Roman Catholic Church. That simple action set in motion events that led to the Protestant Reformation and the reshaping of the face of Christianity.Yesterday, Lutheran and Catholic leaders met in Augsburg, Germany, 482 years later to sign a historic agreement on the central issue that led to the Reformation split: the doctrine of justification -- how God grants salvation.

It was a "crazy faith" idea.Men who work as police officers and computer specialists would become construction workers, toiling for months in their spare time to build their Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Glen Burnie.Yesterday, they put on the makings of a pitched roof -- and the wooden frame skeleton started to look like a church. As they hammered trusses into place under the hot sun yesterday, the men from Friendship Missionary were joined by members of the Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, which has shared its building with Friendship for five years.
