Top-ranked St. Frances (9-3) rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to avoid a second straight loss, outscoring Good Counsel (Md.) 40-15 in the second half, and posting a 62-45 victory in a consolation game of the main bracket of the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament yesterday in Lewes, Del.Senior forward Mark Karcher had 18 points and five assists, and junior center Shawn Hampton added 12 points to lead the Panthers, who lost to Rice (N.Y.), 57-53, Friday at the Cape Henlopen High tournament.

Lila Shanley, 86, a pioneering Hollywood stuntwoman who performed swimming and diving feats for Dorothy Lamour in the 1937 film "The Hurricane," died Friday in Santa Monica.She worked in motion pictures for almost six decades and appeared in more than 100 films under her professional name, Lila Finn. She was also the stunt double for Vivien Leigh in "Gone With the Wind," for Paulette Goddard in "Unconquered" and for Donna Reed in "It's a Wonderful Life."Bill Doggett, 80, a rhythm-and-blues musician who scored a 1956 hit with "Honky Tonk," died Nov. 13 in New York.

Students and faculty at a Northeast Baltimore high school will be offered blood tests to detect exposure to lead after dust containing the metal was detected in parts of the building, school officials said yesterday.Evidence of lead dust was confirmed last month at Fairmount-Harford High School in the 2500 block of Harford Road, a school in the midst of renovations, said Catherine Foster, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore City Public Schools. The faculty was informed Nov. 7, and students and parents were notified in a letter sent yesterday.

A man was killed yesterday in Owings Mills when the limb of a large tree he was trimming with a chain saw struck him in the upper body and pinned him against another limb, Baltimore County police said.Raymond Mark Harbaugh, 33, of the 6600 block of Fairmount Ave. in the Brighton section near Reisterstown Road Plaza was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The body was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy.Police said Harbaugh was about 35 feet off the ground in the 3300 block of Carroll Ave. near Garrison Forest Road, trimming a tree with another man when the accident occurred about 3: 20 p.m.Harry S. Harbaugh Jr., also of the 6600 block of Fairmount Ave. said his brother, who was self-employed, used all the required safety equipment but was not a licensed landscaper or tree trimmer.

Police increase patrols to fight drug crime. Politicians allocate money for drug prevention programs. But John Sigmon, president of the Baltimore-Linwood Association, fires up his grill and cracks open a soda to combat drugs in his Patterson Park neighborhood.With help from neighbors, Sigmon plans to hold midnight cookouts in his neighborhood to drive away drug dealers and show them that residents have "had enough." The first association cookout is set for midnight June 28 at Fairmount and Luzerne avenues.

A Hampstead man was held on $100,000 bond after he was charged with burglary and theft of jewelry and cash valued at more than $7,500 and a .38-caliber revolver, according to District Court documents.David Scott Utz, 24, of the 2400 block of Fairmount Road was arrested Friday morning and charged in the burglary at the home in the 100 block of Portland Drive on March 25.Officers said a bedroom door was broken and drawers were ransacked while the family was away. Mr. Utz also was charged with malicious destruction of property.

The Towson architectural firm of William F. Kirwin Inc. has won the competition to design a cancer survivors park at Fairmount Avenue and Goucher Boulevard.The park will be constructed on an acre of Baltimore County property with $1 million donated by Richard A. Bloch, a co-founder of tax giant H&R Block. The property is next to Towson Town Center, immediately east of the Nordstroms department store.Construction is expected to begin in late spring. The Kirwin design, which features a waterfall and an area for statuary, won in a field of about 30 entries.
