BUFFALO, N.Y. - Defense will take you a long way, but it won't take you the entire way, unless you get some offense to go with it. Loyola got a little, but not enough to topple second-seeded Fairfield in yesterday's women's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament semifinal. The third-seeded Greyhounds fell, 65-53. The Greyhounds (19-10), whose ability to stop conference opponents was second to none, stopped themselves with poor shooting. They managed 37 percent shooting - against 46 percent for the Stags (25-4)

Beating the chemical industry to the buyout, Baltimore has begun acquiring a handful of remaining homes in the neighborhood of Fairfield, in effect extending the public purchase of Wagner's Point to all the communities on the Fairfield peninsula. Two large chemical plants in southern Baltimore -- detergent ingredient maker Condea Vista and herbicide producer FMC Corp. -- offered to buy the same homes this month in a "neighborly" gesture intended to ward off potential lawsuits over environmental exposure.

Adding to the confusion over the relocation of Fairfield peninsula residents, City Solicitor Otho Thompson says the city is not buying the homes in the hamlets of Fairfield and the Heights, as city officials had earlier promised.Thompson's comments contradict the city housing department, which has insisted that the city intends to buy out and relocate any Fairfield resident who wants to leave the heavily industrial neighborhood. The city has sent at least three letters to residents since April expressing interest in acquiring their properties, and has hired appraisers.

A St. Louis company is planning to build a $6 million warehouse on the site of the demolished Fairfield Homes public housing project in southern Baltimore. The project by privately held Madison Warehouse Corp. represents the first major new undertaking announced for Fairfield since the industrial peninsula was designated part of a $100 million federal urban revitalization area nearly five years ago, city officials said yesterday.Officials hope that the project will spur further development in Fairfield, which is part of the federal empowerment zone renewal area and which is undergoing substantial upgrades to its roads, storm drains and water lines.

Not veering from an all-too-familiar pattern, Loyola played well for the first 20 minutes against Fairfield only to fall apart again last night in a 72-55 defeat at Reitz Arena. Last night's effort featured a late Greyhounds lead yielding to a 28-10 Fairfield run over the final 10 minutes. The Stags (11-13, 9-6 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), who had struggled against the Greyhounds' switching defenses, got a healthy portion of those points off their own missed shots. Fairfield's best player and the nation's top rebounder, Darren Phillip, was held to two points and three rebounds in the first half, but finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds for the game.

Baltimore is moving forward gradually with one of the key elements of its multimillion-dollar federal revitalization effort, the development of vacant industrial land in Fairfield in South Baltimore.A general plan has been developed to market the long-neglected area as an ecological-industrial park -- a new ageish term for a network of interrelated businesses in which one company's waste becomes another's raw materials. On Dec. 4, representatives of the city's economic development agency and the $100 million empowerment zone met with two dozen planners interested in developing a master site plan for Fairfield that would include overall land use and the siting of improved roads and sewer lines.
