The Towson men's soccer team reached uncharted territory yesterday, gaining the round of 16 in the NCAA College Cup with a dominating 2-0 victory over Fairfield at the Towson Center Field. It was the 11th shutout for the 20th-ranked Tigers, who advance to meet third-ranked Wake Forest, a 5-1 winner over Hofstra. Towson goalkeeper Billy Chiles sealed the win when he thwarted the last serious threat by the Stags, repulsing a penalty kick by Alex Cunliffe. Chiles made another save on the same sequence, and then watched a third attempt sail over the goal.

Beating the chemical industry to the buyout, Baltimore has begun acquiring a handful of remaining homes in the neighborhood of Fairfield, in effect extending the public purchase of Wagner's Point to all the communities on the Fairfield peninsula.Two large chemical plants in southern Baltimore -- detergent ingredient maker Condea Vista and herbicide producer FMC Corp. -- offered to buy the same homes this month in a "neighborly" gesture intended to ward off potential lawsuits over environmental exposure.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Drew Henderson scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds to lead Fairfield to a 71-63 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Loyola yesterday Alumni Hall.Kevin Green led Loyola with a game-high 23 points, in the process becoming the second 1,900-point scorer in Greyhounds history. He has 1,919.Behind Henderson's 12 first-half points, the Stags took a 33-30 halftime lead. They held the lead throughout the second half, though Loyola closed to within two points with 5 minutes, 27 seconds remaining on a layup by Kevin Anderson.

Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke said yesterday that he would prefer to move all residents out of the tiny southern Baltimore section of Fairfield, but the city does not have the money for another public relocation.Schmoke's comments, which disappointed Fairfield residents, came a week after city lawyers stopped a quiet housing department effort to buy up the property, 14 homes in two small pockets of Fairfield. Residents there have asked to be relocated along with their neighbors in Wagner's Point, an area of 270 people the city is buying out.Housing officials said they were honoring a 20-year-old offer to help residents in Fairfield, an old, predominantly African-American section bordered by chemical plants and tank farms.

EMMITSBURG -- Chris Easterbrooks scored with 1: 54 remaining to give Fairfield the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse championship with an 8-7 win over Mount St. Mary's yesterday.Fairfield (9-5, 7-0 MAAC), which is 22-0 in league games in its three years in the MAAC, led 5-2 midway through the third quarter before Mount St. Mary's (7-9, 6-1 MAAC) rallied to tie it with three straight goals, two on extra-man opportunities.The Mountaineers took their first lead with 13: 46 to play on a goal by freshman Bryan Cole (Oakland Mills)

A Loyola player came up to Fairfield goalie Sam Peterson after the game and gave him a consoling hug."Didn't get one on you," the Greyhound player said.Peterson, a former Broadneck High School star, looked at his old Baltimore friend and smiled gratefully.Many other Loyola players scored, however -- 14 to be precise -- as the No. 11-ranked Greyhounds (3-1) pummeled Fairfield, 24-5, yesterday at Curley Field.Fairfield (1-3), a Division I school from Connecticut and the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion, is in only its fourth year of varsity lacrosse, and is no match for Loyola.

Fairfield University got hot in the second half and beat Loyola, 60-48, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game before 1,475 last night at Reitz Arena.Loyola (2-13, 1-5) was tied 26-26 at halftime, but the Greyhoundlacked the scoring punch to keep up.Fairfield (8-7, 2-2) was led by the strong showing from 6-foot-senior Drew Henderson, who had 13 rebounds and 15 points."That was a monster game for Drew," said his coach, PauCormier, who formerly coached at Dartmouth."We told our big men going in that Loyola's strength is its sizinside.
