Rookie Brandon Fahey started in the outfield for the first time yesterday, adding another skill to his utility repertoire and impressing Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo with his bat. Perlozzo wanted to get Fahey a few plate appearances, and the gangly 25-year-old rewarded him with two line-drive singles, a homer down the right-field line and two RBIs against the New York Yankees. "That's my secret weapon, I guess, for now on," Perlozzo said. "He did a great job. For not having been in there, he was tremendous.

Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo freely admits that his bench isn't as strong as he'd like. The club's blueprint for the season did not include Howie Clark, Luis Terrero or Ed Rogers. Luis Matos wasn't expected to play so poorly that the team would release him. But amid all the chaos at the back of the roster, one stoop-shouldered rookie has emerged as a rock for his manager. And that rookie, Brandon Fahey, never expected it, either. Miguel Tejada needs a day at designated hitter? Start Fahey at short.

The seven errors that Orioles shortstop Luis Hernandez committed during the exhibition schedule aren't going to keep him out of the Opening Day lineup. Manager Dave Trembley confirmed yesterday that Hernandez will bat ninth and play shortstop against the Tampa Bay Rays today at Camden Yards. Brandon Fahey made the club as a utility player who will back up Hernandez and perhaps split time with him in the field as the season progresses. "I'm all for giving people an opportunity and to show [Hernandez]

Minneapolis -- It has been more than two years since Orioles reliever LaTroy Hawkins left Minnesota as a free agent, but the personalized license plates, the ones with "LHFC," are still on some cars in the Twin Cities. The LaTroy Hawkins Fan Club. Hawkins, who has one of the personalized plates with his old No. 32 on it, said there are about 800 members in the group. He said it started one day about six years ago when he was the only Twin to sign autographs after a game. It grew from there, and Friday, when Hawkins pitched again in the place where he spent the first nine seasons of his career, about 60 LHFC members were in attendance.

The impetus for Brandon Fahey's game-winning hit last night actually occurred in the sixth inning, when the second baseman struck out against Kansas City Royals left-hander Andrew Sisco with a chance to give the Orioles a lead. Still contemplating the four-pitch at-bat on the bench two innings later, Fahey got a visit from hitting coach Terry Crowley, who had specific instructions if the rookie got up in the eighth. His average down significantly since the All-Star break, Brandon Fahey also has sunk in the Orioles' batting order, going from second to eighth. Yesterday, it turned out to be a good spot for him, and the team. Fahey singled with one out in the sixth inning to end Toronto starter Roy Halladay's bid for a perfect game. Halladay had retired all 16 batters he faced before Fahey's ground ball scooted into center field. "It's great to see a guy like Fahey break up the no-hitter," shortstop Miguel Tejada said.

WILMINGTON, Del. -- The day that trial followers have long awaited, but that his own defense attorneys feared, arrived yesterday: Thomas Capano took the witness stand in a risk-laden effort to save his own life.Capano quickly took the offensive, anxious to counter weeks of testimony that portrayed him as a control freak who juggled affairs with several women and ultimately killed the one who dared to break up with him, Anne Marie Fahey. The 30-year-old scheduling secretary to the governor vanished after dining with him on June 27, 1996.
