The performance of some of the biggest media outlets in the country Friday would be laughable if the story they were covering wasn't so horrific and tragic: 20 children slaughtered in their classrooms at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. And for several hours, AP and network and cable TV news misidentified the gunman to millions of readers and viewers as Ryan Lanza. They linked to his Facebook page and ran pictures and information from his account on the air and in print.

Rebecca Miller's five-year high school reunion seemed dead on arrival. Only 30 of her 200-odd classmates from Joppatowne High School class of 2005 RSVPed on a Facebook page set up for the reunion, which was booked at a Harford County bar last year. As the event neared, interest waned. Eventually, the reunion devolved into an informal party at the class president's house. "Maybe one or two people went," Miller said. "They were posting on their Facebook status, 'Hey, it's a great party, everyone should come over.' No one came.

Baltimore International College, a private institution that teaches cooking skills and hospitality management, is slated to lose its accreditation at the end of the summer, a rare blow that generally causes colleges and universities to close. The downtown college, which enrolled 474 undergraduates and 19 graduate students in the spring, would be unable to receive federal financial aid if it loses accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. "It is very difficult" to continue operating without accreditation, said the college's president, Edgar B. Schick.

On the menu are things like feijoda , a stew of black beans and meat; espetinho , skewered meats; and pastels , which are like flattened-out stuffed won-tons. Filling the shoes of the former Brass Elephant, which closed in August 2009, is like slipping into an $800 pair of Christian Louboutins. Located in the heart of Mount Vernon, the building is so elegant and beautiful that it immediately demands to be taken seriously. Unfortunately for Museum, the new restaurant and lounge that held its grand opening in June, that type of scrutiny did not exactly help its case on a recent Friday night. It's a shame because the night was filled with dancing to a solid DJ. But there was no mistaking the red flags.

Saturday night in St. Michael's was the preview party for Jack Antwerpen's Big Pickle Food Bar. The official opening is Wednesday. Check out the Facebook page for photos. With restaurants, the name doesn't always fit the place (hardly ever, in fact), but Big Pickle seems a good fit for this a place that's serious about its laid-back atmosphere. Here's the Facebook page , and here's the website .
