A dog might have had an easier time finding a bone in the snow Saturday afternoon than the drivers who were looking for decent parking at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, where hundreds of people refused to let rough weather keep them from one of the biggest animal events of the year, the World of Pets Expo. Pet people who marked their calendars for this shuffled through the slush, sweatered dogs in tow, to get inside the show where it was quite obvious there's not much folks won't do - or buy - for their animals.

The company hoping to bring slots to Arundel Mills mall held a career fair Thursday that was heavy on lobbying for the not-yet-approved project, asking prospective job-seekers to sign postcards addressed to the Anne Arundel County Council in support of the casino. Baltimore-based Cordish Cos., which has proposed a 4,750-machine slots parlor on a parking lot adjacent to the shopping center, sponsored the career and vendor expo at the mall, saying 2,500 workers would be needed for the construction of the casino, and 1,500 permanent jobs would be created.

Clutching a freshly purchased Pilates video, Liz Overstreet, who's 56, pauses for a second to think about what she, a vibrant working woman with toned arms and thick hair, is doing at, of all places, an AARP convention. "I'm not old," Overstreet, who is from Lanham, almost scoffs. "If you're 50 or 55 or 60, you're not old. This show is about - what are they calling it? - 'life after 50.' "We're all here looking for stuff to do, places to go, things to buy and information. Our parents were old people.

Tennille Stokes started planning more than a year ahead of her wedding so that she wouldn't have to draw from her savings. She's nixed a limo, planned the ceremony and reception in one location and reduced her guest list from 250 to 100 - and even contemplated a smaller ceremony with only a dozen people at one point. "I don't need a lot of flowers, I don't need a big DJ," said the Northeast Baltimore resident, engaged since April, as she perused the exhibits at yesterday's Baltimore Bridal Show with maid of honor Tenille Ross.
