Close on the heels of the eclectic and engaging exhibit of Sondheim Artscape Prize winners at the Baltimore Museum of Art comes the eclectic and engaging exhibit of the Baker Artist Award winners. The annual Baker competition, administered by the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance under the direction of the William G. Baker Jr. Memorial Fund, has an unusual starting point: Artists from the Baltimore area working in any genre are invited to upload their work onto a website for anyone to see. A private jury looks at this online community of artists — more than 700 uploaded entries for this year's competition — and chooses three recipients of the $25,000 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize and awards up to nine $1,000 "b-grants.

If there were a dress code for visitors to the current exhibit in Howard Community College's Rouse Company Foundation Gallery, it would stipulate that people must wear blue jeans when going to see Julie van Hemert's "Peopled Jeans. " That's because the artist uses blue jean material for her wall-hanging fabric art. Van Hemert does not significantly alter or transform this material. Instead, she typically clusters a few pants legs together in order to suggest that several close friends are, er, hanging out together.

The finalists' exhibit and awards ceremony of the annual Janet and Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize will move from the Baltimore Museum of Art , where it has been held since the inaugural competition in 2005, to the Walters Art Museum next year. The relocation is necessary because of a $24.5 million renovation project that will temporarily close a portion of the BMA. Doreen Bolger, director of the BMA, called the finalist's exhibit "one of the most anticipated events of the year, and we have enjoyed working with so many talented artists in our community.
