Last year, in Prince George's County, more than 50 strangers visited a woman during a two-week period. The uninvited men arrived at all hours, day and night, some trying to force their way into her house. Each showed up expecting to have violent sex with her - and, in some instances, her children. Terrified for the safety of her family, she resorted to sitting up all night with a shotgun barrel trained on her front door. Her four children slept in the living room, too afraid to sleep in their own beds.

A Carroll County District Court judge has denied bail to a college professor accused of conspiring with a county jail inmate to cause a fire at a Pennsylvania hunting cabin that would kill her ex-husband. Constance Lee Etzler, 45, of the 2100 block of Carrollton Road in Finksburg was arrested at her home Thursday on charges of conspiracy and solicitation to commit murder. A District Court commissioner set bail at $2 million that night. Yesterday, Etzler's lawyer, Michael S. Levin, argued for lower bail, saying his client had never been arrested before and would not flee because she owns a house, has two teen-age children, is working toward a doctorate at the Johns Hopkins University and has been an associate professor for more than five years at Montgomery College.

A Carroll County judge said yesterday that he will listen to tapes that purportedly capture a Finksburg woman discussing a failed plot to kill her ex-husband, then decide whether jurors should receive a transcript of the recordings at her trial next month. The defense lawyer for Constance Lee Etzler, 46, said jurors should try to decipher the tapes, which are of poor audio quality, without a transcript prepared by prosecutors. "It's not OK to offer a transcript to a jury when there's a dispute over whether it's accurate or not," attorney Leonard H. Shapiro argued yesterday at a motions hearing.

My fiancee has her name on three separate mortgages for two different commercial buildings with her ex-husband. According to the divorce decree, her ex-husband has until August 2009 to refinance the mortgages. He wants to do an assumption, which will not take away her liability. He had her sign something last weekend, which in theory says the lenders have agreed to take away her liability from one of the properties. I don't trust her ex-husband, and I have no idea what she has signed.

A Laurel nurse was sentenced yesterday to 15 years in prison for trying to kill her ex-husband by stabbing him in the buttock with a syringe containing a drug so potent it is used in the execution of convicted murderers -- and so easily absorbed that its presence usually goes undetected. Donald Hoard, a hospital records coordinator from Greenbelt, had gone to his ex-wife's house in March 2004 to pick up their son when Ann Hoard attacked him with the syringe and said, "I want my son back," an Anne Arundel County prosecutor said.
