Alexandra, who has been feeling all of her 79 years, sits in her Brooklyn brownstone surrounded by bottles filled with flammable liquid. She keeps a Zippo lighter ever at the ready.  No one, but no one, is going to get her out of her home. Yes, she knows that she is, well -- "Dwindling. That's the word I settled on," she says. So all she wants is to finish out her days with "a little touch of grace. " As portrayed by venerable actress Estelle Parsons in Eric Coble's funny-bittersweet new play "The Velocity of Autumn" at Arena Stage, Alexandra is a startling force -- wry, wise, wistful, obsessive, compulsive, angry, a little spiteful.

In other bar news, Erik reviewed Punk's Backyard Grill, the rare bar that succeeds while being attached to a mall. Estelle wants listeners to know she's not just the happy-go-lucky Londoner many first met on 2008's "American Boy," her cheery hit single with Kanye West. "The Life," the opening track to "All Of Me" (her first album in nearly four years, due out Tuesday), finds the 32-year-old Grammy nominee rapping in her heavy accent, "Tiny with a temper, I'm-a get it till I pass out. " She's not kidding about the temper. "All of Me" isn't a break-up album per se, but some of its more emotionally draining tracks were written as Estelle's three-year relationship crumbled.

ESTELLE EASTWICK STEPHENS, 93, of Treasure Island, died Tuesday January 20, 2009. She was a loving and caring mother of three, an incredible grandmother that five grandchildren could ever dream of, and a great-grandmother of six. She was predeceased in the death of her husband Howard L Stephens. She is survived by her son Howard L Stephens Jr., Franklin, NC, and her daughters, Estelle S Knapp, New Albany OH, Barbara S Woods, Seminole, FL.
