Real estate mogul Donald Trump, the star of a television show based on his business life, is lending his name to a new scent from Estee Lauder Cos. Donald Trump, The Fragrance will be sold in Bloomingdale's and Macy's department stores starting in mid-November, New York-based Estee Lauder said in a statement. The maker of Clinique and Bobbi Brown cosmetics didn't disclose financial terms of the multiyear agreement. Trump, whose casino and hotel business has been losing money for eight years, is capitalizing on the celebrity status he began cultivating in the 1980s.

Two former Noxell executives and the man with whom they built a popular mass market cosmetic brand said yesterday that they will sell out to industry powerhouse Estee Lauder Companies Inc. of New York.The deal with Sassaby Inc. will be Estee Lauder's first venture into the mass market of face cosmetics. The company has previously not strayed from selling to the "prestige" market with higher priced products that are sold largely through department stores.Sassaby, which has an estimated $25 million in annual sales, sells jane, a brand of lipstick, nail polish and other cosmetics aimed at the teen-age market that sell for about $2.99 each and are carried by Target Stores Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.The company is based in Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.

Estee Lauder, founder of the international beauty empire that bears her name and undisputed queen of America's prestige cosmetics industry who pioneered such concepts as the now ubiquitous "gift with purchase," has died. She was believed to be 97, although some sources list her date of birth as July 1, 1908. The doyenne of makeup died Saturday at her home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan of cardiopulmonary arrest, said son Leonard A. Lauder. A self-propelled dynamo, Ms. Lauder raised cosmetics merchandising to an art form through incessant work, a passion for quality and creative sales techniques.

NEW YORK -- Saks Holdings Inc. shares rose 39 percent in their first day of trading yesterday as investors raced to buy a piece of the Saks Fifth Avenue cachet and capitalize on the booming market for luxury goods.Saks' stock rose $9.625 to $34.625 in trading of 11.6 million shares, making it the second-most-active issue in U.S. markets. Saks sold a 26 percent stake, or 16 million shares, at $25 each to raise $400 million. Earlier, shares rose as high as $35.875."We knew it was going to go up but not like this.
