Baltimore County police were investigating the fatal shooting of a man Friday morning in Essex. Police received an anonymous call from someone who reported they had seen two people standing at the corner of Bayner and Sandalwood roads and two shots were fired. Officers dispatched to the scene found one person with gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he died. Homicide detectives had no suspects and have yet to determine a motive, according to police.

Baltimore County firefighters at the scene of a fire in a home for senior citizens in Essex are reporting that all the residents were evacuated safely and that no one was injured. The fire in the Maryln Place Assisted Living Facility in the 900 block of N. Marlyn Avenue was reported at 9:57 a.m., according to Elise Armacost, a spokeswoman for the county fire department. "It sounded at first as though someone might be trapped," she said, "but the firefighters never know until they get there."

Six employees at an Essex haunted house were taken to a local hospital after they became sick from spilled formaldehyde Friday night, Baltimore County police said. The chemical was used in the display at Kim's Krypt Haunted Attraction on Eastern Boulevard, police said. Firefighters were called around 9:15 p.m. to clean up the spill. The haunted house was closed for the evening, police said. A man was shot and wounded early Saturday on a street in Essex, according to Baltimore County police. Authorities had few details Saturday morning. Police said the shooting occurred on the street about 2 a.m. in the 1000 block of Mace Ave., just south of Route 702, also known as the Southeast Freeway. The area is residential, with a mix of single family homes and apartments. Police could not immediately provide an age of the victim or say where or how many times had been shot.

William M. Griffin, 22, of Essex, was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for his role in a drug deal in January that resulted in the shooting death of a bystander. Two weeks ago, another man accused in the case, Donald S. Kohler, 29, of Joppatowne, was sentenced to a 35-year prison term after being found guilty of second-degree murder and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. A third man, Warren J. Yates, 27, of Dundalk, is to be sentenced Dec. 7 on five counts, including second-degree murder and using a handgun in a violent crime.

Freshman Kendra Cameron of Essex Community College won the women's all-events title with a pinfall of 2,390, as the annual National Junior College Athletic Association bowling championships ended a two-day run yesterday at the Brunswick Crown Lanes in the Hawthorne Shopping Center.Erie CC won the women's team title, 12,871, with Essex CC third, 11,163, and Dundalk CC eighth, 10,355.David Bartlett won the men's all-events with 2,553, and led Vincennes University to the team title with 13,985.

If the Baltimore County Council has any sense of political realism, it will resoundingly reject Councilman Donald Mason's effort to annex most of Essex and merge it into his Dundalk-based district.The council must redraw councilmanic district lines every 10 years to reflect population changes. During the past decade, the older communities in the Seventh District lost so many residents that Mr. Mason needs 14,000 more people to satisfy the equal population requirements.The choice is either to go deeper into Councilman William Howard's Sixth District (Rosedale, Parkville)

A parochial school in Essex was vandalized yesterday for the second time in less than a month, according to Baltimore County police.The break-in at St. Clare's School in the 700 block of Myrth Avenue in Essex was discovered just before 7 a.m. when a custodian arrived to open the building, police said.Sgt. Stephen R. Doarnberger, apolice spokesman, said someone broke a window in a rear door to get into the school. The intruders then overturned file cabinets, rummaged through classrooms on both floors of the building and emptied food from a refrigerator, Sergeant Doarnberger said.
