Lacrosse Rabil, Schwartzman receive MLL weekly honors Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins) and Denver Outlaws goalkeeper Jesse Schwartzman (Johns Hopkins, Pikesville) were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Rabil had three goals, including a 2-point shot, and five assists in Boston's 17-16 win over the Ohio Machine in overtime Saturday. Schwartzman stopped 28 of the 34 shots he faced, an .820 save percentage, in Denver's 9-6 win over the Chesapeake Bayhawks that night.

It seems, as Tony Danza tells it, that the rich and the famous are not so very different from you and me.They get geeked up over being around famous athletes, and that's why so many entertainers sign on for duty as presenters for the ESPY awards, which are handed out tonight at New York's Radio City Music Hall (8 o'clock, ESPN)."It's kind of the melding of sports and entertainment. It's a different mix. It's why the Golden Globes are so much fun, because everybody's there," said Danza, who will be host for this year's show, the fourth of its kind.

ESPY Awards Michael Phelps, Jessica Long among winners Michael Phelps won two ESPY Awards on Wednesday night at the annual ceremony in Los Angeles, topping the "Best Male Olympian" and "Best Record Breaking Performance" categories, and Jessica Long took home the trophy for "Best Female Athlete With A Disability. " Phelps, a Baltimore County native broke the all-time medals record at the Olympics last year by earning six in London, extending his career total to 22 medals.

Detectives in the HBO crime series The Wire go after bad guys in Baltimore wearing shirts and tactical gear made by Under Armour. The thugs in the television show wear hats and hoodie sweat shirts manufactured by the sportswear company. Golf characters in a Tiger Woods Golf video game play longer and better in hot weather when they put on an Under Armour polo-style shirt. And in the movie Gridiron Gang, the team of troubled youths and their coach, played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, hit the field in Under Armour uniforms.

Cycling All riders tested pass for Tour de France All 189 riders who underwent blood tests ahead of the start of tomorrow's Tour de France showed negative results, the International Cycling Union said. The UCI carried out the tests across the 21 teams early yesterday morning. The race, which will finish July 29, will start with a 4.9-mile prologue in London, then move to Canterbury on Sunday before heading into Belgium and France. The announcement comes on the heels of Germany making it a criminal offense to possess and deal in performance-enhancing drugs.

Several members of the organization will be on hand tonight at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for the ESPY Awards, ESPN's annual sports awards show. The Ravens, who won their second title with a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3, are nominated in the “best team” category. Their competition is the University of Alabama football team, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Miami Heat, the San Francisco Giants, the University of Oklahoma softball team and U.S. women's Olympic gymnastics team.

BALTIMOREANS recognized during Wednesday night's ESPY Awards were Carmelo Anthony, male college athlete of the year; swimmer Michael Phelps, three-time world-record holder currently in Barcelona, Spain, for the world championships; Johnny Unitas, who died last Sept. 11; and Diane Geppi-Aikens, the Loyola College women's lacrosse coach who died of cancer June 29. It was a stirring, stellar representation. Dating game: ESPY Awards host Jamie Foxx, meanwhile, spilled some interesting beans about Keyshawn Johnson dating Serena Williams.

Jessica Long has had to overcome obstacles all of her life. The field she had to beat out to win an ESPY on Wednesday night for the Best Female Athlete with a Disability was a tough one, filled with some remarkable athletes. Long, who had to have her legs amputated when she was just 18 months old in Russia where she was born, triumphed once again, winning the award for the second time. The swimmer is the second repeat winner in the award's history. Long grew up in Middle River after emigrating from Russia.
