The SportsBusiness Journal reports that ESPN might offer cable operators this deal: Swap ESPN Classic for ESPNU. Classic's audience is shrinking, and ESPNU's penetration isn't what the network bosses would like. (For more, go to baltimoresun.com/mediumwell)

When football kicks off for Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference teams this weekend, the highest profile games will be on the road. McDonogh, last season's No. 1 team after going 11-0, tries for a second-straight win at Benedictine College Prep in Richmond, Va., Saturday while St. Frances attempts to avenge last season's loss to Friendship Collegiate at Spingarn High School in Washington, D.C. Gilman, last year's A Conference runner-up to McDonogh, starts the season on national television and will play St. Edward, a nationally-ranked program from Ohio, on Sunday as part of the ESPN High School Showcase.

I am in heaven. I know I am part of a minority, but I love college baseball the way most folks love NCAA basketball. Forget the Final Four, the Road to Omaha is what gets my adrenaline pumping. And ESPN started the journey for viewers like me with an outstanding tournament selection show Monday at noon and a "Road to Omaha" production at 6 p.m. Both aired on ESPNU, the collegiate sports channel that my TV always seems to be set to when I turn it on during baseball season. ESPN has long done right by college baseball while much of the rest of the media world ignored it. But this year, ESPN is upping the ante in promising to cover every game from here on out among the 64 contenders for the national championship that will be decided at the College World Series in Omaha next month.

Maui Invitational Various times [ESPN2, ESPNU] Three games from the college basketball tournament are on ESPN2 (a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m., another at midnight) and one on the largely unwatchable ESPNU (9:30 p.m.). What to watch for: any coach donning the traditional colorful island shirt wear. That's a coach to root for.

In November, more than 700 high school boys and girls lacrosse players on 46 teams - and over 400 adult volunteers, supporters, active military, alumni and spectators - came together to raise more than $65,000 for two severely wounded Connecticut soldiers, including U.S. Army Capt.
