White Sox and Angels Bill Shaikin Los Angeles Times The White Sox might be the biggest surprise, since management appears to vacillate between keeping an old team together and rebuilding. The Sox won the World Series in 2005, but they have won one playoff game since then and attendance has fallen from 3 million to 2 million. But pitching wins, and the White Sox are the only AL team in the top three in earned-run average for starters and relievers. The Angels would be the biggest disappointment.

Baseball Orioles@Angels 3:35 p.m. [MASN]: The pitching matchups seem to be a little lopsided in this series, but, of course, that's what happens when you play the best team in baseball. The Orioles' Garrett Olson (8-5, 5.67 ERA) tries to keep his mini streak of two wins going against Ervin Santana, (12-5, 3.38).

The mystery that is Alfredo Simon is not really a mystery at all. He showed again Sunday afternoon that what you see is what you get — if what you see is an on-again, off-again pitcher who was off again in a lopsided 11-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Camden Yards. Remember how manager Buck Showalter shrugged off Simon's impressive performance Tuesday night? Remember how he talked about "trust" and made it clear that Simon had not earned enough of it to be assured of a place in the starting rotation next spring?

Anaheim, Calif. -- The Orioles walked a dangerous line all night, leaving 14 runners on, including eight in scoring position. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Nick Markakis jogged a few strides toward the wall before realizing there was no hope of another miraculous catch. So he stopped and watched Mike Napoli's drive disappear into the right-center-field seats. A batter earlier, Markakis made a daring dive over the wall in right field, his arm seemingly extending into the second row to take away a two-run home run from Erick Aybar. But he was powerless to do anything else to save starting pitcher Steve Trachsel last night.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A pitch earlier, Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo was convinced that his team had at the very least tied the game. The moment the ball rocketed off David Newhan's bat and headed for the right-center-field gap, Perlozzo was sure that it was a triple, all the way up to the point where Tampa Bay Devil Rays center fielder Joey Gathright sprinted under the ball and made the catch. Perlozzo felt the disappointment in the Orioles' dugout. It lasted several seconds, just long enough for Melvin Mora to step up to the plate and send the Orioles to their most gratifying victory of the season.

First baseman Mark Reynolds was out of the starting lineup Sunday for precautionary reasons after he was hit in the head by Los Angeles Angels pitcher Ervin Santana in the third inning of Saturday night's game. Reynolds said Sunday morning that he felt fine except for a sore spot above his left temple. He also left no doubt that he feels Santana hit him intentionally in his first at-bat after he slammed his 34th homer off the Angels right-hander. "I think he hit me on purpose," Reynolds said.

For 14 seasons, Camden Yards has been devoid of playoff hopes in September. Now, that malaise is spreading to the visitors' dugout. With a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night, the Orioles (62-88) have won four consecutive games against teams clinging to postseason dreams. They have one more game against the Angels on Sunday, then try to ruin the baseball lives of the American League wild-card-leading Boston Red Sox next week at Fenway Park. "I think it more so just shows the type of people we are as a team," said Orioles rookie left-hander Zach Britton, who allowed just three hits, two walks and a run over seven excellent innings.

There will be Giants Phil Rogers Chicago Tribune Seldom has a wild-card era September offered less excitement for baseball fans. About the only real drama lies in whether two of baseball's best pitching staffs — the Giants and Angels — can rise to the occasion to overcome teams with much better lineups (the Diamondbacks and Rangers). As much as I love the Angels' trio of Jered Weaver, Ervin Santana and Dan Haren, I don't think they can be good enough to stop a Rangers team that's a threat to outslug the Red Sox or Yankees in a playoff series.

On a night that was punctuated by sweltering heat and a scorching opposing pitcher, the Orioles lost not only a game but also one of their sluggers for the rest of the season. Los Angeles Angels right-hander Ervin Santana took a no-hitter into the sixth, Vernon Wells hit a ninth-inning grand slam and the Angels beat the Orioles, 6-1, for their first victory against Baltimore since August 2009. If Santana's three-hit, one-run gem wasn't hard enough to swallow, Orioles manager Buck Showalter announced in his post-game news conference that outfielder Luke Scott was headed back to the disabled list with persistent discomfort in his right shoulder.

Gordon Beckham could have a huge season hitting second in the White Sox lineup, behind Juan Pierre and in front of Adam Dunn, Paul Konerko, Alex Rios and Carlos Quentin. He really seemed to grow in the second half of 2010. … Because they are highly competitive division rivals, it's hard to imagine the Angels sending Mike Napoli to the Rangers directly (he went from the Angels to the Blue Jays to the Rangers), just as it was unlikely the Cubs would have wanted Mark DeRosa to wind up with the Cardinals less than a year after they traded him to the Indians.
