I lost the icons on the Windows 98 task bar. Sometimes I see them for a bit, but when they appear, the icons have become quite small. I have talked to computer people and tried potential solutions but without success. I'll never know why Microsoft refuses to fix this confusion over apparently lost task bars. It's caused by a feature designed to hide the entire line across the bottom of the screen that holds the Start button and quick-launch icons in the left corner and the system tray and time display at the right.

Amid mounting fan frenzy, the Orioles began cashing in this summer on the team's runaway success. Capitalizing on the expected demand for postseason tickets this year, the team pitched 2015 season ticket plans with the opportunity to buy seats for October baseball at Camden Yards. The pitch proved successful. And as the Orioles continued to win, sweeping the Detroit Tigers in the American League Division Series, team officials expanded the program, offering more guaranteed games for buyers of larger season ticket packages.

I am having real trouble with sending e-mail using Outlook Express. This error message comes up on my Windows XP Home Edition every time I try to send a .txt or picture file to another e-mail address: "The host `smtp' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: `pop3', Server: `smtp', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Server (SSL): No, Socket Error 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D." This is all gibberish to me. Do I need to pay Microsoft or Dell to get it fixed?

I want to know how I can use devices designed for USB cables with older connections like the SCSI output on my computer. I have been told that I can buy a cable to use on a SCSI device to hook up to a USB port. Is it really that simple? I am looking at two Canon scanners for slides and could save $100 if I could use the one with USB on my SCSI. There is a wide variety of companies that offer cables to translate among the various old standards like SCSI, serial port and parallel port to the new USB (universal serial bus)

Twice now while setting up my Windows XP computer to use equipment I already own, I have received the following error message: "Software has not passed Windows LOGO TEST to verify its compatibility with Windows XP, continuing your installation may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system." First it was while trying to set up my scanner, a Visioneer 8100. The solution was to have Visioneer send me a new CD. Now the real problem: After trying to set up my Largan Chameleon digital camera, I received the same message as above.

You seem to be able to come up with solutions that the tech-support people write off with a "remove program and reinstall" approach. I am running Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP and have been trying to export messages for archiving purposes, but every time I run the Export messages I receive an error dialog box with "The export could not be performed. An error occurred while initializing MAPI." Any suggestions on how to fix the problem or a reasonable workaround? Yes, I have a workaround.

I am having a major problem with the Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser. Every time I do a search on Yahoo.com or on a Web site that contains a search box, I get an error saying that there was a problem with Internet Explorer, and that it will be shut down, sorry for the inconvenience and that IE will restart ... but it is not the illegal-error message. I have tried to repair IE through add/remove programs and reinstalling IE altogether, but I still get the message. Can you help? Your problem is with what is called a browser plug-in, software designed to let your copy of Internet Explorer use the Java code incorporated in many Web sites instead of Microsoft's own software for doing that kind of stuff.

I bought a Gateway laptop in December with a free Vista upgrade. I made sure the laptop was Vista-ready and have received the Vista pack. However, I have been hesitant to install the Vista upgrade because of the previous problems with it, and because I do not know what to expect (problemwise) once installed. The IT people are waiting before installing Vista at work, so they are no help. Would you advise to go ahead and install the upgrade or wait until more improvements are made? - Kay O'Reilly, bellsouth.

IF CAMPING REMINDS YOU OF a bad night's sleep and mosquitoes, well, you have a good memory. But the plus side to a $500 weekend with a tent is that the budget leaves plenty of cash for adventure. The three-day trip with my husband, David, included surfing lessons, a fishing tournament and meals that were anything but freeze-dried. And we suffered zero mosquito bites, even though the place we pitched our tent is known for them in the summer. Assateague is essentially a giant sand bar. The 37-mile-long barrier island is so narrow in places you could kick a soccer ball across it. The Eastern Shore destination is known for wild ponies and sandy campsites.
