Whether it's hosting "Inside the NBA" or calling a Major League Baseball playoff series, Ernie Johnson makes sports broadcasting seem easy. There has not been much joy for Orioles fans with the Birds losing the first two games of the American League Championship Series to the Kansas City Royals, and TBS delivering lackluster telecasts. The delay of the first pitch on opening night in Baltimore because super-bright TV lights on the set of the TBS pre-game show in center field were left on was an unforgivable gaffe.

I'm sure I'm alone in having watched all that I could of Game 1 between the Kansas City Royals and the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night, given the quick turnaround between Orioles games and the singular focus on the home team here in Baltimore. Watching the painfully slow extra-inning affair in Anaheim, Calif., only reinforced a thought I had during Kansas City's wild-card win over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night, and baseball Twitter reinforced that reinforcement for me. What's up with Cal Ripken Jr.?

That was a bit of an awkward moment after Thursday night's Red Sox-Rays game on TBS. After fellow studio analysts Dennis Eckersley and Harold Reynolds offered opinions on turning points in the game, host Ernie Johnson turned to Cal Ripken Jr. But Ripken said those two already had covered his points. So Johnson went to a commercial. (For more, go to baltimoresun.com/mediumwell)

Cal Ripken Jr. will make his in-booth color commentary debut during the Orioles' game against the Yankees on Sunday afternoon on TBS. Ripken - who has previously worked in the TBS studio - will call the crucial AL East showdown along with Ernie Johnson and John Smoltz for a national audience. (The game will be blacked out on TBS locally and shown on MASN.) It'll be Ripken's first time ever working as an in-game analyst at a major league game. Ripken will be honored Thursday night at Camden Yards with the unveiling of his legends sculpture beyond center field.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter was interviewed from the dugout during the TBS broadcast and shared his thoughts on J.J. Hardy being deked by Alex Rodriguez at third base in the third inning of Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday night. Third-base coach DeMarlo Hale was waving Hardy home after a grounder got past Yankees shortsop Derek Jeter, but Hardy stopped when he saw Rodriguez flash his glove at the bag, and he was eventually stranded at third. “DeMarlo [Hale] is one of the finest third base coaches in all of baseball and I've had some really good ones," Showalter told Ernie Johnson, Cal Ripken Jr. and John Smoltz on the broadcast.

Once again Monday night, TBS came through with superior coverage of Baltimore Orioles playoff baseball. You can read more on what I have said about the broadcast team of Ernie Johnson, Cal Ripken and John Smoltz here . Ripken seemed a little less engaged Monday night, but maybe the grind is getting to him. Kidding -- he's the Iron Man, and all three were again fine in Game 2. Smoltz was better than fine. He was razor sharp in his analysis, as when he explained what happens when Orioles closer Jim Johnson overthrows.

Presenting another column in the same week when I was hit with the sports media notes franchise tag, which works out to be enough to pay for just basic cable - no Cathouse on HBO! - for about six months: * Talkers magazine, a radio trade publication, ranked the top 250 talk show hosts in the country. Jim Rome, whose long pauses and almost incomprehensible self-references are heard locally on Fox Sports 1370, was the highest-rated of the sports variety at No. 29. No Baltimore sports types made the list.
