HERNDON, Va. -- Defensive lineman Eric Williams of the Detroit Lions announced last night that he has been traded to the Washington Redskins.According to Williams, the Redskins gave up running back James Wilder and a fourth-round draft choice to get him.The Redskins did not confirm the deal until several hours after Williams announced it because they had problems contacting Wilder, who is in the process of moving. The trade is also contingent on Wilder and Williams passing physicals today with their new teams.

Ron Hubbard contest last month.Spaceships, dragons and otherworldly phenomena appear ready to pounce on visitors to Eric Williams' Elkridge home and studio. But they are harmless -- simply vivid oil paintings that Williams created after being inspired by the lusty covers of fantastic novels in science-fiction bookstores.Last month, Williams' long hours spent at the canvas delving into the depths of his imagination paid off. Judges presented him with the grand prize in the illustrators' division of the L. Ron Hubbard science-fiction contest.

Dexter Manley, noting he's been drug-free for 375 days, said yesterday he is "very optimistic" about his chances of being reinstated by National Football League commissioner Paul Tagliabue next week.Manley, the Washington Redskins defensive lineman who was banned for a minimum of one year last Nov. 18 for drug use, said he has a meeting scheduled with Tagliabue in New York Friday morning.Manley, who is eligible to be reinstated on Sunday, said he has passed every drug test he's been given in the past year.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Running back Brian Mitchell got a second chance yesterday, but it lasted only two plays.Benched after the third game of the season because of Reggie Brooks' 154-yard game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Mitchell was moved into the starting lineup by the Washington Redskins yesterday because Brooks had been ineffective the past two games.Mitchell gained 1 yard and 8 yards the first two plays against the Phoenix Cardinals and then was knocked out of the 36-6 loss with a separated shoulder.
