"I would say that those who are callous about babies and callous about life ought to be brought to bear the callousness of their indifference. " - Newt Gingrich "It's about some phony ideal, some phony theology. " - Rick Santorum, on environmental stewardship What's it been like as a pro-lifer, during this year's big-money campaign? It's been an experience of split personality, I would say as a pro-life conservationist. Most conservationists I know tend to be pro-life.

I read with interest the commentary by Kathi J. Heron entitled "Don't backpedal on environmental ed" (Feb. 11). She is right that environmental education should be a critical component of education in Maryland, particularly from the perspective of developing and nurturing environmental stewardship in our children. However, there is another side to this coin, and that is the relationship between the environment and human health. In teaching environmental education this connection is often missed: What humankind does to the environmental comes back to bite us with regard to our health.

The Maryland State Department of Education is conducting a search for the next set of environmentally friendly schools to compete for the title of 2013 National Green Ribbon Schools, a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education that recognizes schools' efforts to have students become environmentally literate and conscious. The state began participating in the federal program last year, and was one of only six states to have all four nominees receive a Green Ribbon, according to the department, who also noted that in 2011 Maryland led the nation in becoming the first state to include environmental literacy as a graduation requirement.

In his article about Christian environmentalism ("Confluence of Good Friday, Earth Day a reminder of our duty to protect God's creation," May 3), Bishop John R. Schol, alluding to "Green Dragon" views of environmentalism as "actively anti-Christian," claims that some voices are "distorting the intentions and efforts of environmentally-minded Christians. " As founder of the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation — which produced a DVD series, "Resisting the Green Dragon" and works with many of the top evangelical leaders and ministries in America — I can tell you that an overwhelming number of us are glad to see Christians becoming increasingly involved in environmental stewardship.

Soft-spoken Maria Broadbent didn't want to wear a badge and be a cop when she became Annapolis' director of the Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs. She wondered if there was a way to make her job easier and get residents to become environmental stewards. She put together a program of green initiatives - the Certified Green Environmental Steward Award - for lodgings, offices, retail, restaurants and other venues. To earn the certificate, businesses need to incorporate environmental practices from a comprehensive checklist and be rated on a point system.

They've grown up during an era of unprecedented interest in the environment, and on Oct. 7, students from Pot Spring Elementary School and Dulaney High School turned their knowledge, and public service intentions, into action. Upperclassmen in John Enders' horticulture class at Dulaney joined first- and third-graders from Pot Spring to plant more than 30 trees on the fringe of a forested area between the two schools. Along with other recently planted trees and the long grasses that surround them, the new trees will act as a buffer for a stream that runs through the woods behind Pot Spring.

Moyer awarded the first round of certifications for several local restaurants.
