The Right Rev. David Keller Leighton Sr., the former Episcopal bishop of Maryland who ordained his diocese's first woman priest and led other church reforms, died of respiratory complications Wednesday at Fairhaven Retirement Community in Sykesville, an institution he helped found. He was 91. "He helped bring the church out of the country club," said the present Episcopal bishop, the Right Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton. "He aided the homeless, the poor and the marginalized, African-Americans and, of course, women.

Carolyn Marie Hauck, a retired Enoch Pratt Free Library staff member who encouraged patrons to explore films and the arts, died of dementia complications at the Pickersgill Retirement Community. The longtime Mount Vernon resident was 89. Born in Anderson, Ohio, she was the daughter of Carroll E. and Marie Hauck. She earned a bachelor's degree in art from Miami University in Miami, Ohio, and had a master's degree in library science from Western Reserve University. She moved to Baltimore in 1954 and joined the central Pratt Library.

Leroy Wilkins, a retired steelworker and active church member, died of cancer June 17 at his West Baltimore home. He was 84. Mr. Wilkins was born in Winterville, N.C., and moved when he was a child to West Baltimore. He was a 1938 graduate of Carver Vocational High School. During World War II, he served with the Army in Okinawa and the Philippine Islands from 1943 to 1946, when he was discharged with the rank of corporal. Mr. Wilkins worked for 40 years at Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s foundry at Sparrows Point, until retiring in 1986.

Dr. Alfred Byron Starratt, the retired rector of a downtown Episcopal church whose liberal preaching attracted a devoted congregation, died of complications from Parkinson's disease Wednesday in a Penobscot, Maine, nursing home. He was 91. In his 30 years at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon, Dr. Starratt had a provocative weekly radio broadcast and was active politically in civil rights issues. "Shortly before he became rector, Emmanuel Church had been considering closing its doors," said his daughter, Penny Starratt Duffy of Rochester, Minn.
