Douglass football coach Elwood Townsend was named Ravens' High School Coach of the Year Sunday after guiding the Ducks, 3-7 two years ago, to the best season in school history -- 13-1 with an appearance in the state final. Not only did the Ducks reach the state final for the first time, but Townsend's team won the first football playoff game in school history, 68-0 over W.E.B. DuBois in the regional semifinal. The Ducks went on to defeat Baltimore City rival Edmondson, 20-14, in double overtime for the regional championship and then rolled over Cambridge-South Dorchester, 54-13, in the state semifinal.

The Ducks qualified for the regional playoffs for only the second time in school history, and they suffered their losses by a total of 16 points -- to No. 6 and Class 1A champion Dunbar, 8-6; No. 7 Milford Mill, 18-16; and No. 11 Edmondson, 14-6, in the regular season and then 14-10 in the Class 2A North regional semifinal.
