It wasn't clear what freaked Jerrell Ellerbe out more: when I read him his mother's maiden name, or the part when I told him his date of birth. I'm guessing, though, that what disturbed him most was when I supplied his e-mail address and then read his complete Social Security number to him. "Who are you again?" the 25-year-old data entry specialist said, clearly shaken. "Tell me who you are again?" If I were someone with wicked intentions, I might have shaken him down for money. Or heck, not call him at all and just taken his data on a shopping spree.

Check out a Loyola College basketball practice, and chances are you'll find assistant coach Herman Harried giving some instruction to Roderick Platt, polishing the 6-foot-10 sophomore center's jump hook, urging him to go strong to the basket. This is how the former Dunbar Poet imagined his role on the Greyhounds' staff when he accepted the job back in July. He would be a teacher, a motivator. The aches and pains that came from running the floor and banging bodies the past five years while playing overseas would be discarded, along with the sweaty uniform he peeled off for the last time.

What is Dino Gaudio's notion of a difficult transition?Gaudio talks about how smooth it was, settling in as the basketball coach at Loyola College, where the administration was helpful and the players have worked hard. The spiel works, until you recall the scene he walked into.Gaudio came down from Army, but if the officer candidates at West Point really wanted to experience a combat zone, they could have played for Loyola the past three seasons. Former coach Brian Ellerbe was one of the best recruiters to work in Baltimore, but during his watch, at least seven quality players left the Greyhounds before their time was up.Ellerbe, who landed as the interim coach at Michigan, left Loyola over what were termed "mutual philosophical differences."

Since injuries and other assorted misfortunes led to a 2-10 start, Loyola College men's basketball coach Brian Ellerbe has seen some encouraging signs from his team, including five victories in the past six games. One reason, and perhaps the most important: The Greyhounds have been able to practice together on a regular basis."We've had seven or eight guys who have constantly been there," Ellerbe said last week. "We haven't been influxing somebody who's been hurt on and off as much over the last 10 days."

Each week, Baltimore Sun reporters Aaron Wilson and Matt Vensel will look back at the Ravens' previous game and that of their next opponent. Ravens 23, Browns 16 Strategy: The Ravens' no-huddle remained in vogue. It was employed on 49 of 77 snaps to generate 438 yards of total offense. The shotgun formation was utilized 41 times, buying time for Joe Flacco before pass rushers invaded the pocket. The Ravens aggressively attacked Browns' soft Cover 2 coverage scheme to exploit the absence of Joe Haden, sending dangerous Torrey Smith deep and working intermediate area with Anquan Boldin.

At 1,992 pounds, the projected front seven of the Baltimore defense will weigh just under a ton, which is about the same as a tiny smart car, a large walrus or the Johnny Unitas statue outside M&T Bank Stadium. It could also be the heaviest front seven in the NFL next season. The folks over at Blogging the Beast recently took the projected depth charts from Ourlads, a reliable source, and totaled the weights of all the front sevens . I'm not sure why they did this, but it is interesting nonetheless.
