The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Vera Bradley and Coach Purse bingo fundraiser at 2 p.m. today at the station, 6275 Old Washington Road. Admission is $18 in advance, $20 at the door. There will be door prizes and a chance to win up to $500 in Vera Bradley and Coach prizes. Howard County Fire Chief William Goddard, members of the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department and County Council Vice Chair Courtney Watson will gather Monday, Sept. 8 at 9:30 a.m. for the groundbreaking of the new Elkridge fire station, being built on a 7.56-acre site at the corner of Montgomery Road and Bauman Drive in Elkridge. The new 33,757-foot building will cost an estimated $10 million to build, and will house fire and emergency medical services personnel and equipment. The two-story facility will feature six drive-thru apparatus bays, sleeping quarters for 23 people, a fitness training room, kitchen, dining room and other facilities, including an emergency short-term evacuation area.

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department recently went swimming in 28-degree weather at Sandy State Park, near the Bay Bridge, to raise money for Special Olympics Maryland. "It actually wasn't too bad," said firefighter Mike Barnett, who lives in Elkridge. "The wind wasn't blowing too bad, and the sun was out. But then again, it was 30 degrees." The Elkridge contingent, which included youngsters and parents from the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department Junior Firefighter Program, raised $5,548.
