An Annapolis company has received an order to produce 1,500 electric-vehicle charging stations to serve the small but growing number and variety of plug-in, battery-powered cars on America's roads. SemaConnect Inc. said Tuesday it would be supplying charging stations to 350Green, a California-based developer of electric vehicle-charging networks that's planning a coast-to-coast rollout of charging stations. "Conveniently located charging stations will play a critical part in the adoption of EVs," SemaConnect founder and president Mahi Reddy said in a statement.

Baltimore's first public electric-vehicle charging stations debuted Thursday in a Mount Royal parking garage, as places begin to pop up across the Baltimore-Washington area to plug in the new battery-powered cars trickling off automakers' assembly lines. The developers of the Fitzgerald, a recently opened apartment building on Mount Royal Avenue, installed two charging stations in the adjoining 1,245-space parking garage, which is available to the public as well as residents. The University of Baltimore and Lyric Opera House are nearby.

SAVING THE BAY is about to get a little easier. I'm talking about the imminent explosion of less-polluting, higher mileage gasoline-electric hybrid passenger vehicles coming to market. Hybrids can significantly improve air quality and water quality. For example, the one I drive, Toyota's mid-size Prius (look for my Bay plate: KICKGAS), emits about one-tenth the nitrogen of a typical late-model vehicle. That's big - or it would be if lots of us drove them. Nitrogen's a key ingredient in smog, and the bay's biggest pollutant.

Electric, hybrid and small cars will grab center stage at the Detroit auto show this week, as the industry adapts to a world reshaped by recession and environmental worries. Ford wants to build on success in midsize sedans and reignite small-car sales, while Hyundai aims to extend last year's triumph in budget-conscious models. GM and Chrysler will start fresh with electric vehicles but also try to boost their small-car credibility. Toyota hopes to solidify its dominance in hybrids. The new models must be successful if automakers are to reverse last year's 21 percent sales plunge.

Commentator Bob Bruninga would have us believe that electric cars could substantially increase the energy efficiency and decrease the environmental impact of autos while providing an economical and practical alternative to our current gasoline-fueled fleet ("Keep on open mind on electric cars," Oct. 4). Nothing could be farther from the truth. Let's look at energy efficiency. The gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine has an efficiency rate of about 25 percent, while diesels have an efficiency rate of 30 percent.

General Motors officially launched its new electric motor in White Marsh Tuesday, a milestone in U.S. manufacturing - and a key part of the company's bet that the electric-vehicle market is poised to grow. With production under way at the Baltimore County "eMotor" plant, GM says, the company is the first automaker to manufacture electric-drive motors domestically. The operation is small for now: About 20 employees make motors for the plug-in electric Chevrolet Spark EV, side by side with 27 robots.

The dust-up in Maryland over the Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. smart grid proposal highlights the importance of utilities, regulators and other stakeholders having a clear understanding about the range of potential benefits of smart grid technologies and the need to design smart grid plan expressly to achieve those goals. The California Public Utilities Commission took a big step in the right direction recently when it approved a comprehensive plan to maximize the environment and consumer benefits of smart grid technologies.

Electric car history: 1900: First electric wagon built in Baltimore by the Schaum Automobile and Manufacturing Co. 1906: Baltimore Bargain House, a dry-goods wholesaler, bought an electric truck, the first of its kind used for heavy hauling in the city. It could carry 10,000 pounds with a top speed of 5 mph, and could go 40 miles before needing to be recharged. 1911: Baltimore Gas & Electric Co.'s predecessor bought 10 electric wagons for its use and became a vendor and servicer of electric vehicles.

Labor Day is a national tribute to American workers who have contributed to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. It is my belief that our GM Baltimore Transmission plant team members and partners of United Auto Workers Local 239 embody the character of Labor Day as much as any other workforce in American history. At this time last year, General Motors had just emerged from bankruptcy thanks to the American public, and we were all unsure about our future and our company.
