Music students at Eleanor Roosevelt High School will present a winter concert Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. The concert features the Roosevelt and symphonic bands; symphony orchestra, concert orchestra and Roosevelt Strings; and the women's, chamber and gospel choirs. The Eleanor Roosevelt High School music program is holding its annual fruit sale each month October through March. Proceeds from the sale of freshly picked oranges and grapefruit are used to provide quality instrument and music for the band and orchestra program. Jean Heneks, of Laurel, is participating in Susquehanna University's Stadium Band this fall, playing at home football games, the homecoming parade, pep rally and special events. Heneks, a sophomore chemistry major, is a 2011 graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School, in Greenbelt. She is the daughter of Jeff and Julia Heneks, of Laurel.

Laurel student takes top honors in citizen beeLaurel resident Robert Wolinsky took top honors in the sixth annual Close Up Foundation Maryland Regional Citizen Bee at Capitol College March 18.A junior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Robert defeated 23 other students to advance to the Maryland State Citizen Bee on April 22 in Annapolis. He also earned a $500 U.S. savings bond.The students were quizzed on history, geography, economics, government, culture and current events.

Eight local students have been named semifinalists in the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship program. The students are Daniel Townsend , from Laurel High School, and Sebastien Anderson , Taryn Harris , Caitlan Moore , Maurice Shelton , Matthew Shirley , Randi Williams and Amber Youhouse-Clark , all from Eleanor Roosevelt High School. These scholars will compete for one of 800 National Achievement Scholarship awards worth more than $2.8 million to be awarded in the spring.

Geraldine Marie Mishev, a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, has been selected as a state recipient of the Amateur Athletic Union/MARS Milky Way High School All-American Award for academic, athletic and community service achievements.*Stephen D. Cohen, professor of International Service at American University in Washington, recently received the "Distinguished Professor" award by the Phi Kappa Phi.*Leza Collins of Baltimore was among the outstanding high school students from across the nation selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference held last month in Washington.

Jean and John King, of Laurel; and Carol and Allen Heyne, of Bloomingdale, Ill., announce the engagement of their children, Kimberly King and Matthew Heyne. The bride-to-be is a 2002 graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School and a 2006 graduate of the University of Maryland. She is currently employed by theU.S. Census Bureau. A 2009 graduate of the University of Maryland, the future groom is employed byU.S. Department of Homeland Security. A September wedding is planned.

The mood was celebratory Tuesday night at Arcos Restaurant in Fells Point, where the Dreamers - students brought to the United States illegally as children, who now want to pursue higher education here - won their battle for in-state tuition breaks at the state's public colleges and universities. "This means so much to me, my parents and my family - who are the other dreamers," Nathaly Uribe, a senior at Glen Burnie High School who was 2 when her parents brought her from Chile, said while keeping an eye on election results at the Mexican restaurant on South Broadway.
