Country music stars will get a whiff of Eldersburg next week. After being chosen as the official candle of the gift tent at the Country Music Awards on Nov. 1, in Nashville, the Eldersburg-based company, Unwined Candles, will have its products in gift bags for all participants. For owners and creators Dave and Anna Neith, that means late nights and full weekends as he makes more than 300 candles to take to Nashville. "It's a little overwhelming … a good problem to have," Dave Neith said.

Fifth District County Commissioner Doug Howard, who represents Sykesville and Eldersburg, will host a town meeting on Monday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m., at the South Carroll Senior Center, 5928 Mineral Hill Road, Eldersburg. The meeting will be the first in a series of eight monthly sessions for the 5th District. Howard said law enforcement will be the primary focus of the Oct. 8 meeting, with representatives from the Sheriff's Office providing information on policing efforts in the Eldersburg/Sykesville area.

Baltimore Ravens player Torrey Smith couldn't stop smiling when he entered Linton Springs Elementary School's gymnasium on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Greeted with thundering cheers from a sea of purple, the wide receiver was there to kick off the school's Project ACES (Active Children Excel in School) initiative - a program partnered with the NFL's Play 60 Challenge - to fight childhood obesity with 60 minutes of daily exercise and healthy eating. "All that purple is nice," Smith said, greeting the crowd.

Maryland State Police are searching for two of three men they say robbed an Eldersburg bank Saturday morning. Employees of the Carroll Community Bank, 1321 Liberty Road, told police that three men entered the bank shortly after 11:30 a.m., displayed a gun and demanded money, police said. One robber fled in a red Dodge Durango on Barnett Avenue, while the others left in a blue four-door sedan, police said. Police apprehended a suspect in the red Dodge Durango after a brief pursuit.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office says a 35-year-old man was killed on Saturday afternoon in a crash at the intersection of Johnsville Road and Piney Ridge Parkway in Eldersburg. At approximately 1:15 p.m., Sheriff's Office personnel and members of the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department responded to the accident scene, and medical personnel treated a male victim. This man, identified as Leif Erik Foerter, 35, had life threatening injuries and was transported to Carroll Hospital Center, where he died.

An Eldersburg man died Saturday when he was ejected from his vehicle in a head-on collision, according to the Carroll County sheriff's office. Leif Erik Foerter, 35, was killed as the result of a crash at Piney Ridge Parkway and Johnsville Road in Eldersburg about 1:15 p.m. A Honda Accord traveling west on Piney Ridge entered the intersection and struck a Jeep Wrangler that Foerter was driving north on Johnsville. Foerter, who was thrown from the Jeep, was transported to Carroll Hospital Center, where he died.

Catherine N. Hamilton, a homemaker and doll collector, died Thursday from lung cancer at Seasons Hospice at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown. She was 75. The daughter of a coal miner and a seamstress, the former Catherine Norris Jones was born and raised in Williamsburg, Ky., where she attended public schools. Mrs. Hamilton came to Baltimore as a teenager and later worked for several years during the 1950s as a secretary for the Rowan Controller Co. in Westminster, manufacturers of electrical motor controls.

The Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics at LifeBridge Health is expanding by opening satellite offices in three counties and offering new services at Northwest Hospital. The new satellite offices will open in Westminster, Eldersburg and Owings Mills. LifeBridge, which also owns Sinai Hospital in Baltimore will, also now offer surgical and rehabilitation services at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown. The medical system's orthopedic base will remain at Sinai, which is home to the International Center for Limb Lengthening and the Center for Joint Preservation and Replacement.

National Night Out is on the move for two Carroll County communities this year - Westminster and Eldersburg. For the past six years, the building at 6228 Sykesvillle Road (Route 32), in Eldersburg, once known as Nathan Henry's Restaurant, has stood empty. But it hasn't been forgotten. The nondenominational Journey Church Community has been planning to turn the site into the Ugly Mug, which organizers describe as a not-for-profit coffee/cafe/concert house for the community, especially young adults. After six years of fundraising, campaigns, setbacks and road blocks, proponents say the goal is still alive - and in fact may be close to reality.
