The American Folklore Society has just smiled on one of Maryland's veteran folklorists, even if news of an award makes for a season of mixed blessings for Elaine Eff. She seems to be taking it all in stride, thinking about the next thing, and the next. Since the 1980s, she's been a champion of Baltimore screen painters, Smith Island cake bakers, crab pickers, muskrat skinners, watermen, crafts makers and mill hands - efforts that have earned her the Botkin Prize, considered the top honor the 121-year-old American Folklore Society gives to folklorists who are not affiliated with a university.

Sister Mary Elaine Costello, a member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy and a retired educator and administrator, died Wednesday of heart disease at The Villa, her order's retirement home in the Woodbrook neighborhood of Baltimore County. She was 96. Mary Elizabeth Costello was born in Washington, and after the death of her mother, was sent by her father to Mount St. Agnes in Mount Washington, where she attended elementary and high school. "There, her widowed father could count on her aunt, Sister Loretta Costello, author of "The Sisters of Mercy of Maryland 1855-1930," to keep an eye on his daughter," said Sister Augusta Reilly, a member of the Sisters of Mercy and a retired educator.

On August 19, 2009, SR. M. ELAINE COSTELLO, RSM; beloved member of the Sisters of Mercy; daughter of the late Michael and Anna Costello. Pre-deceased by siblings, Dan and Anna. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and great- nieces and great-nephews. Friends may call for a Christian Wake Service at The Villa, 6806 Bellona Avenue, on Friday at 7 p.m. Visitation will be held at The Villa Chapel on Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

(Betty) and Thomas (Sandra) Jones, sisters Louise Robinson of VA., Viola Smithlin, Vernet Wilson (Sam), devoted friend Joyce Simms,13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of other family and friends. Family will receive friends at the family owned WYLIE FUNERAL HOME of BALTIMORE COUNTY, 9200 Liberty Road Friday from 6-8 P.M. Services will be held Saturday in the Chapel of the above mentioned funeral home 9:30 A.M. wake 10:00 A.M. funeral.

Elaine D. Coniff, a former hospital financial counselor and active volunteer, died of stroke complications March 2 at Oak Crest Village. The former longtime Cockeysville resident was 89. The daughter of a pharmacist, Elaine Dolores McGinn was born in Baltimore and raised on Arizona Avenue in Hamilton. She was a graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame. During the 1960s and 1970s, Mrs. Coniff worked as an outpatient financial counselor at Johns Hopkins Hospital and what is now the University of Maryland Medical Center.
