If you haven't read Charles Isherwood's wonderful tribute to legendary singing actress Elaine Stritch, please do (to paraphrase Ethel Mertz, he said everything I wanted to, but couldn't). He mentions this poignant performance by Elaine Stritch of "Something Good" from the movie version of "The Sound of Music," which made me want to rush out and hear it. I thought you'd want to hear it, too. (Sorry the audio/visual quality is poor -- the performance is still priceless.)

This weeks episode is kind of great because the women are finally starting to get along with each other, but not with anyone else. So even though Marysol and Lea don't like each other, Lea is hanging out with Elsa, Marysol's mom. Lea explains that her gay friend James (who Elsa and Marysol have gotten in numerous altercations with) also dresses up as a woman named Elaine.  Elsa makes a face like she is overwhelmed, and then says "that disturbs me mentally," in her typical dramatic voice.  Elsa is straight out of a Telenovella.

Growing up in a Baltimore row house, Elaine Northrop had a happy, if somewhat unconventional, childhood. Her father was a dreamer and a gambler, recalls Northrop, who grew up to build one of the most successful real estate companies in Howard County from the ground up. Her mother was the family's breadwinner and dealt with their money woes, but her father was an eternal optimist who taught her to believe in herself. At age 23, such life lessons would be called into play when she agreed to marry her first husband on their second date.
