Gael Miller is fairly sure $2 million will bankroll "a modest, not movie star" existence. Steve O'Donnell wavers between his "realistic" $1 million and his "fantasy" $4 million. Then there's Francis McAndrews, who says a cool $2.5 million should do it. The digits differ, but the dreams are the same: to accumulate a pot of dough large enough to live on comfortably after retirement. It used to be called your "life's savings." Then it became your "nest egg." These days, it's simply known as The Number, or what Lee Eisenberg describes in his recently released and buzzed-about book of that title: How much money do you have to save before you can safely retire?

Charming Hostess sounds like somebody who might be catering a tea at the Roland Park Woman's Club. But, no, it's a singing group, three women, engaged in what they call "eerie harmony, hot rhythm and radical smarts." They say their genre is "best described as nerdy, sexy, commie, girlie." Charming Hostess appears tonight at Red Emma's, "Baltimore's only combined radical bookstore and fair-trade coffee house," a workers collective that one might say is the polar opposite of a high society tea party.

A city jury awarded $15 million yesterday to a man who said he was sexually abused as a youngster by a Baltimore lawyer who was a friend of the family. Michael E. Wenzel, 22, sued John A. Brooke in Circuit Court, claiming that Brooke forced him to perform sex acts from the time he was 11 until he was 16. Wenzel had sought $6 million in damages. But after six days of testimony before Circuit Judge John N. Prevas and three hours of deliberations, the jury awarded him slightly more than $15 million - $14 million in punitive damages, $1 million for pain and suffering, and $50,000 for future counseling and therapy.

The majority of fans are not out of control In response to the column by John Eisenberg regarding fan behavior at sporting events ["With doors open to louts, denying them seats not easy," Wednesday], I must say I am tired of the fan base as a whole being looked at as if it were out of control. Mr. Eisenberg states that fans are able to hide behind the belief that "buying a ticket enables you to do or say whatever you want." Well, as an American citizen, it is the Constitution that gives me the right to say whatever I want - not buying a ticket to a game.
