There is one thing in our political discourse that bothers me greatly, and that is how we so easily denigrate tens to hundreds of millions of our fellow Americans to express our biases ("How the welfare state has grown - and sapped America's economy and culture" April 7). There is no excuse for it. It is so demeaning. It reminds me of one of the Star Wars movies, where the Death Star destroys a whole planet. Just like that. Rid of it, them. Mr. Ehrlich do you even realize that is what your thoughtless rhetoric does?

I can't wait for my next Sunday newspaper to see a negative response to Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s recent column ("Democrats riding high, but beware a midterm crash," March 10). As I stated in a previous e-mail, like clockwork every Sunday there's a response countering Mr. Ehrlich's previous column. Note that these letters never run in Monday's paper when there's a smaller readership. I guess the philosophy at The Sun is something to the effect of let's give Mr. Ehrlich exposure and an opportunity to give him some publicity but by golly, let's sock it to him with a consistent negative reply.

A documentary about Jack Abramoff being released today already has a cult following: Maryland Democrats. The party of Gov. Martin O'Malley is promoting the movie, Casino Jack and the United States of Money, because rival candidate Republican former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. pops up in it. Ehrlich is in a smiling snapshot with the disgraced lobbyist, who is now serving four years in federal prison. The Democrats say Ehrlich's connection to Abramoff "runs deep," pointing to a Hanukkah party Abramoff attended at the Governor's mansion and a $16,000 donation that Ehrlich accepted from Abramoff, though he returned it. They also have a mutual friend, Edward B. Miller.

Three months after announcing his candidacy for governor, former Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. made it official Friday when he and newly chosen running mate Mary Kane filed paperwork with the Maryland State Board of Elections. "I feel really great about it," Ehrlich said afterward. He and Kane spent the morning as guests on Washington-area television and radio news programs. They have 10 parade appearances scheduled during the Fourth of July weekend, Ehrlich said.

Republican Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. is set to launch his bid to reclaim the post of Maryland's governor at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Rockville, seeking the job that Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley took from him after one term in 2006. Ehrlich confirmed last week that he was planning to run for governor, hoping to capitalize on national anti-incumbent sentiment that has emerged since the last presidential election and has deepened during the health care reform debate. Despite national trends, the former four-term congressman and his aides have acknowledged that they have to make greater inroads in Democratic Montgomery County, which has the greatest number of registered independents and, in 2006, turned out the most voters in the state.

David Boyd is right to say "so what" to the governor plastering his name and photo all over DNR brochures and bulletins ("A cheap shot at O'Malley," March 9). However, all this self promotion amounts to "in-state campaigning" by Governor O'Malley. During the Ehrlich administration, the legislature held countless hearings in Annapolis and the media paid a great deal of attention when then-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. was in commercials promoting tourism. These commercials aired out-of-state (non-voters!

Taking a hard-line stand against proposed light rail projects in Baltimore and the Washington suburbs, former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. might have driven a wedge between himself and business leaders in regions where he needs to collect votes. At a recent round table in Montgomery County, Ehrlich said he would scuttle Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley's plans for light rail on Baltimore's Red Line and Washington's suburban Purple Line — possibly but not necessarily replacing them with dedicated bus lanes.

THERE ARE two Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jrs.: One is Princeton Bobby, the other Arbutus Bobby. Princeton Bobby presides over the State House while Arbutus Bobby dominates the campaign trail. It's Arbutus Bobby who confounds the Democrats. No doubt about it. Mr. Ehrlich is master of the permanent campaign. And, lacking the bread to do much else, he at least has the wit to put on a good circus. By doing so, Mr. Ehrlich has Democrats between the devil and the deep. And in the end, he'll emerge at the top of the heap.
