The state's largest professional classical dance company - Ballet Theatre of Maryland - has chosen Dianna Cuatto to serve as its artistic director, succeeding Edward Stewart, the company's founder, who died last July. Cuatto was selected after a four-month search by a committee appointed by the company's board. Having arrived late last month, Cuatto is recruiting faculty for the ballet school, interviewing dancers, handling administrative chores, planning the 2003-2004 season and getting acquainted with local ballet supporters.

Edward Sinman, former vice president of Stewart & Co. Department Stores, whose career in retail management spanned three decades, died of a brain aneurysm yesterday at Sinai Hospital. He was 83.Funeral services for Mr. Sinman were scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Sol Levinson Funeral Home, 6010 Reisterstown Road.For 25 years, Mr. Sinman worked for Stewart & Co., a chain with six Baltimore locations. Hired in 1945 as merchandise manager, Mr. Sinman became vice president and managed the Reisterstown Road Plaza store until he retired.

Edward D. Stewart, artistic director of the Annapolis-based Ballet Theatre of Maryland since its founding, died Tuesday of lung cancer at Stella Maris Hospice at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. He was 59 and lived in Hampden. He had been associated with the dance troupe since 1980 and taught numerous students privately, and as a faculty member at Towson University, Villa Julie College and the Baltimore School for the Arts. The son of a coal-miners union official, he was born in Kulpmont, Pa., and graduated from Mount Carmel Catholic High School in Mount Carmel, Pa. In a 1981 Sun interview, he credited Fred Astaire's movies with getting him interested in dance.

Dance company names new officersThe Ballet Theatre of Annapolis has announced its new officers for 1993-94.Susan Davies is the new president of the board of trustees, succeeding Bettze Libson who will continue to serve on the board. Tom Saquella is the administrative vice president; Cynthia Stiverson, vice president; Stoddard Knowles, treasurer; Jan Rutherford, assistant treasurer; and John Menocal, technical director. Linda Lamone continues as secretary.New board members are Deborah Potter, Laurie Putscher, Bob Agee and Paul Serini.

The Ballet Theatre of Annapolis will present a widely eclectic program of dance at Maryland Hall this week.BTA has described its spring production, which includes a variety of dance from classical to abstract contemporary, as "mixed repertoire."Two new works will have their premieres. "The Crown Jewel" choreographed by BTA's artistic director Edward Stewart in memory of his mother, Alice, who died last March, is a non-narrative tribute to the person who strongly supported Stewart's early interest in dance.
