On Thursday, March 27, 2003, CATHERINE HARROD (nee McCutcheon); beloved wife of Herbert Harrod; devoted mother of Gladys Vice, Edward Johnson, Donald Rose and the late Clyde Johnson. Also survived by five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, eleven brothers and sisters and a host of relatives and friends. Family will receive friends at the Harrod's home. Arrangements by Joseph L. Russ Funeral Home, 2222 W. North Ave. A Christian Wake will be held on Tuesday at 10 A.M. at First Church of the Brethren, 4500 Liberty Heights Ave. with service to follow at 11 A.M. Interment at Garrison Forrest Veterans Cemetery.

A Sykesville couple is charged in four burglaries, and Howard County police are looking into whether the duo might be responsible for several more. The suspects were identified as Edward J. Johnson, 28, and his wife, Robin R. Johnson, 27, who live in the 1300 block of Buckhorn Road. Edward Johnson was arrested on Friday and charged with first-, third- and fourth-degree burglary and theft, and was being held at the Howard County Detention Center in lieu of $2,600 bond. His wife was arrested on Saturday and charged with the same crimes.

For more than half a century, the Arbutus Social Club in southwestern Baltimore County has hosted bull roasts, baby showers and weddings. The brickfront building on Stevens Avenue is often booked throughout weekends, with sometimes two events a night. But the head of the club says there's never been an event like the birthday party that carried into yesterday morning. That gathering ended abruptly in gunfire, with two men dead and three people injured - and police imploring witnesses to break their silence.

Dr. Edward Wilfred Johnson Jr., a Public Health Service dentist and former public school science teacher, died of cancer Oct. 18 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The former West Baltimore resident was 70. Born in Greenville, S.C., he was a 1954 Frederick Douglass High School graduate. A member of the track and field team, he also belonged to the Airgoras Social Club. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from what had been Morgan State College, and he belonged to the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity.

Edward B. Johnson, a retired laborer and longtime East Baltimore resident, died Saturday of a heart attack at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He was 84. Mr. Johnson, the son of sharecroppers, was born and raised in Blair, S.C., and moved to Baltimore in 1940. During World War II, he served as a naval cook and was aboard the battleship USS Missouri at the time of the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay in 1945. "He didn't talk about his wartime activities. He was very private about that," said his wife of 25 years, the former Dorothy Sanders.
