A fire last night aboard the Danish freighter Adrian Maersk, which was undergoing repairs at the Sparrows Point shipyard, is being investigated by county fire officials and shipyard police.The fire reportedly broke out about 10 p.m. while the ship was in dry-dock at the north ship yard near Warehouse Road and workmen were either removing paint or painting a section of the ship.The cause of the fire and the extent of damage was not available.Reports that two workmen were made ill by paint fumes carried by the smoke and heat could not be confirmed.

George H. Ament, a retired steel worker and a lifelong sports fan who coached youngsters on area football fields and baseball diamonds, died of a heart attack May 17 at his Edgemere home. He was 94.An original Baltimore Colts season-ticket holder, he never missed a home game -- he also attending the team's 1958 sudden-death championship in New York -- and could be found in the stands at baseball, basketball and hockey games.Mr. Ament also was a fixture at Sparrows Point High School games.

Baltimore West side Man, 40, swallows bag of drugs, dies A 40-year-old man who was being pursued by police suffocated after swallowing a bag of drugs Friday afternoon, a police spokesman said. Officers were attempting to arrest Darryl Jackson in the 500 block of N. Payson St. when he fled on foot, said Detective Donny Moses, a police spokesman. Officers said they observed Jackson, who lived in the same block, place a plastic bag in his mouth. He ran a little further before collapsing, Moses said.

Karen Francis Alchin, 54, known as 'Bible study lady'Karen Francis Alchin, known as the "Bible study lady" to many people in Baltimore County's Edgemere and Dundalk communities because of her devout religious beliefs, died Sunday of cancer at Franklin Square Hospital. She was 54.1995 PHOTO She was ordained a minister for the Jehovah's Witnesses in 1984, led Bible classes in her community and frequently carried on long conversations about God with friends. A native of Allegany County, she moved to the Baltimore area as a child and graduated from Southern High School in 1960.
